Well, let's see, there's the standard-ish stuff: every year my mother makes fruitcake and Christmas puddings, very kindly leaving out glacé cherries because I consider them an abomination, doing the marzipan and royal icing herself; Teebäckerei, whose recipe I have unaccountably failed to type up, which are biscuits with much of the flour replaced by ground nuts (usually a combination of walnuts and hazelnuts though almonds are also acceptable) and a small quantity of grated dark chocolate; as mentioned, my father makes around twelve dozen mince pies every year.

There is a Thing my mother and I started doing when we went hiking the summer after I turned 18, the summer before I went to university, the summer I decided I might be a geologist: we collected a small handful of cranberries and brought them back with us and froze them, and then come the Solstice and such we boiled them up with bought cranberries, on the general principle of holy water. (Er, for those less steeped in this stuff than I am: you add any amount of holy water to a vessel containing water that has not been blessed etc and the whole lot is rendered sacred. (This is a thing that never made any sense to me about Buffy: why would anyone buy multiple bottles of holy water! You just... add some more to the stuff you got out of the tap! Or like add it to the reservoir and BOOM. As it were.)

Other than that, the main traditional food is non-veg and as such I haven't eaten it in years. Discussion of meat preparation. )

Satsumas and clementines are a thing, from Heiliger Nikolaus on. Increasingly, cheese & crackers & port (my mother keeps getting asked to play the organ at weddings, which she detests because she is not terribly good at it, and being given nice port in payment).

Nusspotitze! That is also a thing that we make fairly regularly at this time of year.

And that is more-or-less that. If you would like me to elaborate on any points or discuss things I've failed to touch on, let me know! ♥

Well, crap

kaberett: Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson sit side by side, facing forward, heads slightly tilted towards each other. (elementary-faces)
[personal profile] recessional has just written an entry that goes a long way towards explaining why I identify so hard with Sherlock and Spike. Not all of it, I don't think - I didn't get that sudden sense of relief, of lightness, of being suddenly much larger (of containing multitudes with grace) - but certainly a very good shove in the right direction.
kaberett: A sleeping koalasheep (Avatar: the Last Airbender), with the dreamwidth logo above. (dreamkoalasheep)
in which spoilers for Angel s4 finale )

(NB I consider the post-s7 Buffy comics to be non-canonical, because they appear to be largely an excuse for nonsensical porn focussed in really gross male-gazey ways on Buffy, ALL THE OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THEM ASIDE.)
kaberett: Lin Beifong crying (lin-tear)
I spent about an hour last night crying my eyes out, in desperation, and I'm still not sure of all the reasons, except that once again I am circling back around to trust, over and over and over again. Here's a thing, though: I find the Samaritans via e-mail rather less helpful than my lovely people in IRC.

Here's some of what set it off, tangentially, in all the ways that really fuck me up with Buffy as identity figure: she's a P!nk fan.

We are told, canonically, that she is a P!nk fan.

We are told this via her making a flippant remark about Get The Party Started.

Oh, Buffy. Oh, Buffy.

(And, of course, trust? That is some of why the second half of Buffy s7, which I marathoned last night, hit me so hard.)
kaberett: Lin Beifong, looking hopeful (lin-hope)
This post springs from a conversation in IRC with [personal profile] randomling and [personal profile] batrachian.

We were talking about characters, and about how ambivalent I feel towards Buffy - how angry she makes me, so often, and how much I want to give her a hug, and how invested I am in unpicking her psychology, compared to how little interest she holds for (many?) other people.

Content notes: trauma, death, violence, abuse, suicide/al ideation, spoilers through end of S6. )
kaberett: An xkcd stick figure with a blue arrow tattooed on its head, controlling water, earth, fire and air. (xkcd)
I kind of feel like this is cheating because I've only got 19 works on AO3? But whatever, it is something other than my brain melting out of my ears as I continue to contemplate mass extinctions.

SO THERE WE GO.

And by kudos... )

Specifically: years and years and years ago, way before I got as far as actually watching any significant quantity of canon, I swear I read a fic (possibly a crossover?) that involved Willow going to magic rehab in Oxford. The obvious terms to google aren't getting me very much of anywhere; I don't suppose any of you happen to recall it/have a link to it/etc?

(... it was worth a shot.)
kaberett: A series of phrases commonly used in academic papers, accompanied by humourous "translations". (science!)
Here are our collective thoughts on the series so far (we're halfway through BtMPDG s4/SV s1), and I apologise to those of you who um SHOW OF MY HEART about this, because I am really not. And on the other hand I am still watching and intending to ride it out, so.

Basically, for me this is the series of "oh god how was this the most feminist thing on TV in the 90s", and also the series of "I really love all the female characters and kind of want to give them all hugs and a show where they can ACTUALLY BE PEOPLE." AND FURTHERMORE it is the show that is going to get me writing RPF. Of 15yo Whedon writing graffiti in the school toilets about how THAT BICH (note spelling) IS A BICH Y DSNT SHE LUV HIIIIIIIIIIIM, and furthermore about his highly repressed attraction to the dude Larry is based on.
