Jun. 9th, 2019 05:50 pmReading. Kari, Amruta Patil. Gorgeous graphic novel; check her stuff out. Also still plodding along with Tales from the Inner City.
Not reading, but did get myself to the point where I can, in fairly short order, actually get the recently-bought books onto my ereader and then actually read them, so, you know, watch this space for The Raven Tower squee, finally.
Watching. Good Omens! Elementary. Continue v fond of both. (We're cowatching the Fortunate Prognostications with the Oxford lot, so having to find time that (a) we're all actually approximately able to spend an hour in front of a screen, and (b) isn't past anyone's bedtime is exciting moving parts; we've had the third episode. Very much enjoyed What They Did with the title sequence in this one.)
Listening. A sat me down with This Year, The Mountain Goats. I tentatively don't hate it, and will tentatively try listening to more of them.
Cooking. Adventures in bread (breadventures): it does indeed work to flour the banneton with Some Bonus Poppy Seeds.
Phở! My first! Or at least my first in... about eight years, wow, this being the reason I originally bought a half-kilo sack of star anise, but I was then Sad about the Inadequacy of my Attempt and gave up. It turns out I now live in London, such that holy basil is trivial to acquire, which means: NOODLES YES. Plenty of room for improvement, but I am delighted by the proof-of-concept.
Experiments with scones continue. This batch had slightly too much buttermilk but Progress Continues, and there's another batch of buttermilk culturing (hopefully) in the bathroom, so poor A will be subjected to Yet More Experiments.
I succesfully blanched, dehydrated and powdered four carrots. They smell, approximately, of carrot, and are bright orange. They have not yet been reconstituted into macaron. (And I should buy some mascarpone to make the filling.)
Exploring. I Accompanied a Younger Relative on a Scandalous Trip to Sh! (NSFW) (they're no longer kind of terrible about trans people; it's pretty great) and subsequently For Ice Cream. ( Read more... )
Vanilla Black on Friday, as a belated birthday dinner. I remain inordinately fond of (1) the architecture thereabouts, and (2) the crockery. Proper write-up to follow, promise.
A friend's pub board games on Sunday afternoon; played a new game (King of Tokyo) and won the first of three rounds, ahahaha.
Growing. I appear to have killed all the chilli seedlings, bah.
However! The strawberries are doing pretty well and I've repotted them into their dedicated planter along with straw (albeit I need to net them now the bird feeder is attracting the attention of etc) and the lemon is Putting Forth New Flowers (and lots of new leaves). The bay has approximately doubled in size in the last couple of weeks. The orchid has produced its FIRST POST-PURCHASE FLOWER (I mean, it did develop some new ones on the existing flower stalks last year, but the flower stalks Existed At Point Of Purchase, which these ones! did not!)
Observing. We've been seeing wood pigeons at the feeder (they keep Sexily Flying Into The Window, it is... very), mostly, but we also now have at least two very regular coal tit visitors. Alas the squirrel is undeterred by the cayenne.
Poking. Did a bunch of clearing out my Pokébox by trading with A... and therefore am now the proud owner of four new Lucky Pokémon: Slowpoke, sunhatty Raichu, Muk, Ivysaur. (A got another two Lucky Magikarp out of the deal.) Rather to my surprise, I caught four shiny Slakoth during the... 45 minutes or so... of community day we actually participated in.
