In part because it might be useful to someone else with a similar level of tech-literacy to me, and in part because I expect I'm going to have to do this again so I might as well write it all down. Probably not of interest to any of the usual readers!

  1. Acquire xubuntu (why xubunutu? 'coz it's lightweight)
  2. Acquire VirtualBox (do this second because the xubuntu, or whatever other *nix install you feel like getting, download will take Some Time)
  3. wget [appropriate URL from http://melts.ofm-research.org/unix.html]
  4. unzip [folder name]
  5. ./[filepath]

Unfortunately the only reason I'm doing this is that MELTS doesn't seem to play nice on a netbook screen. In an ideal world I'd sort that out, but oh well - I've got this solution now!

eta except, damn, rhyolite-MELTS in the VM does not seem to be recognising any keystrokes... but is fine with the mouse. Do not currently have guest tools installed.

Aha, Paula has come up trumps: this post details the reasons and workaround for the problems with registering keystrokes.
