In part because it might be useful to someone else with a similar level of tech-literacy to me, and in part because I expect I'm going to have to do this again so I might as well write it all down. Probably not of interest to any of the usual readers!
- Acquire xubuntu (why xubunutu? 'coz it's lightweight)
- Acquire VirtualBox (do this second because the xubuntu, or whatever other *nix install you feel like getting, download will take Some Time)

Unfortunately the only reason I'm doing this is that MELTS doesn't seem to play nice on a netbook screen. In an ideal world I'd sort that out, but oh well - I've got this solution now!
eta except, damn, rhyolite-MELTS in the VM does not seem to be recognising any keystrokes... but is fine with the mouse. Do not currently have guest tools installed.
