I think I'm objecting more on the basis of story structure than on morality. Maybe the witches never gave the original parents another passing thought (and that's interesting, as you say), but we as readers do, and the story just used them for setup and then moved on.

It's a hard problem, no question, and I would have appreciated the author engaging with that hard problem a bit more.

All that said, I still really liked the story. Thanks for rec'ing!
