idk, I'm pretty much on board with morally ambiguous sympathetic protagonists; we are not the worst thing we have ever done, callousness does not exist in isolation, and so on. I don't think our witches here are nice, but I can also see how they got that way, and I think that's... perhaps more interesting? I mean, I also think a culture in which The Done Thing is so wildly different is nice - in the interesting-not-necessarily-good way - to have treated as absolutely normal and default, but!
I think I'm objecting more on the basis of story structure than on morality. Maybe the witches never gave the original parents another passing thought (and that's interesting, as you say), but we as readers do, and the story just used them for setup and then moved on.
It's a hard problem, no question, and I would have appreciated the author engaging with that hard problem a bit more.
All that said, I still really liked the story. Thanks for rec'ing!
