Content note for "real names" bullshit.

There is someone I have known for about a year. She's been working at a different site due to lack of lab space; she moved here last week and has been assigned a desk behind mine.

Half an hour ago she asked me if I was coming down to beers. "Maybe, I've got some labwork to do," I said. She looked over my shoulder at the paperwork spread across my desk.

"Oh!" she said. "Your name's not Alex!"

... whereupon I realised the uppermost page just happened to have my full name on it. My full name, about which I'd been feeling gently pleased ten minutes earlier.

"Um, yes it is," I said, covering my first two names with one hand and pointing to the "Alex" with the other. In desperation, I gave her a string of examples of other people I know who use their second or third names. "Oh," she said, "I suppose I do know someone who's really called [name] but uses Ash."

... yeah. Her having-been-gone-for-half-an-hour later, I am rapidly hitting the point of "relaxed enough again to actually cry at my desk."

:-(

The only time "Your name's not ____!" is an acceptable remark is when it's accompanied by intense mortification because you just found out that someone's preferred name isn't the one you've been using all this time. Otherwise, actually, that's the worst thing to say to someone. (I can get it if this person was saying this in the vein of "oh my god, was I calling you the wrong name?!" But that's easy to smooth over with "nope, Alex it is," and not a ton of examples of other people using other names.)

Lol Alex's colleague: my spouse and my firstborn would like a word. Oh, and my spouse's father. And my mother and her sister (who were both given their use-by name as middle names because the names went together better that way round, in the opinion of my grandparents).

(I can probably think of some more if I try, but that's without even trying.)

That's really bizarre, I don't think it's at all uncommon in the UK to go by a name other than the first listed regardless of reason. I have oodles of friends who's first letter of their crsid isn't the first letter of the name they use, it's never occurred to me that the name they went by wouldn't be considered their real name by some people.

That would mean my mother is some sort of double-agent who has been going by the wrong name since…BIRTH. See, the name her parents wanted to give her in order would have given her 'scandalous' initials (spelling MEN) and that would not do on personalized luggage and things. So her initials are EMN and she goes by the nickname version of the middle name! So she is a double double user of her "not real" name. Which also happens to be the name she gave me? That I now go by a nickname of? GASP.

Also I guess Mark Twain is a giant fraud too. And, like, all of the Bronte sisters when they originally published. And I could list a bunch of other people if that would make you feel better.

GUESS WHAT WORLD, SOMETIMES THE NAME OUR PARENTS GIFTED US WITH IS CRAP AND AS GROWN-ASS ADULTS WE GET TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT NAME AND YOU SHOULD RESPECT THAT AND NOT BE AN ASS.

*sends good thoughts about your day from hell and also righteous indignation*

Post-emptively, someone in a supervisory capacity to her needs to make it abundantly clear that whatever her ~*personal feelings*~ about people using names other than their very-firstmost forename as their name of daily use, that what she said was unacceptable and that if she tries calling you by *her* choice of name not *your* choice of name, that is also unacceptable. >:(
