Hexarchate Stories -- I forget who I've blathered at about these, but I like them hugely, and the body-count (with occasional body-horror) is HUGE. Like, barely on my tolerance level. BUT THEY ARE GREAT BOOKS! If you, er, can handle the body-count. Which you might want to know going in.

Murderbot is definitely great as well. A huge amount of fun. Body-count is more the standard fare for, well... It does call itself Murderbot.

T. Kingfisher is guaranteed to have at least one pragmatic character, and the body count is usually fairly low. There can be some creepy elements, according to other people, but my creepyelement-meter is broken because it seems perfectly in keeping for [spoiler] to be present, and it's tense, yes, but not as bad as when I was exploring in World of Warcraft and I start rounding a corner and there are these GIANT FRICKIN' SPIDER LEGS OVER TWICE AS HIGH AS MY CHARACTER NOPE NOPE NOPE.

There's a new Bujold novella out as well!

I need to catch up on the McGuire novellas too. ;_;

If you're only noped on the series & not the author, check out Penric's Demon? It's the 5 Gods universe, but can stand alone fine, I think.

Edit:

(Obviously, if noped out on the whole author, disregard! ^_^)

OH RIGHT I HAVE THE H*ARCHATE NOVELLA ON MY PHONE I SHOULD READ THAT!!!

Kingfisher would be a "comfort read, even if I've not read it before." Like, okay, I gather that her forthcoming horror novel is probably not comfort, but since I don't see her prior creepystuff as creepy until someone points it out (...okay, the rose stuff in the beauty-and-the-beast retelling, but... I can't explain...), I have no idea how I'm going to feel about that.

SA Chakraborty, _The City of Brass_

(Both of these are the start of a trilogy but I've only read the first so far.)

So, I went to find it, and... it turns out it is in my Kindle. I'm sorry, I thought I had a paper copy.
