Cooking. I think the only notable thing has been wild garlic pesto, which involved only a very little "cooking", but which did go well with pasta + griddled purple sprouting broccoli & asparagus.

Oh, wait, except I did also shake the internet some more and have two more things to try in terms of Maybe? Yoghurt? That Is Not Grainy?

Eating. ASPARAGUS. Shortcake courtesy of A. Tagine out of the freezer (thank you past me).

Exploring. The local surrounds; Barking Park.

Creating. SOME NONSENSE. Specifically some nonsense related to Admin: The LRP.

My department, GOD, wears blue caps with the PD logo. The hats are optional but they're useful for a variety of both tangible and intangible reasons, e.g. at E1 I was bimbling across the site minding my own business when I heard Someone say "... you look official" -- on the basis of the Blue Hat -- and that is how I wound up attempting to coordinate getting one (1) car free of The Quagmire. (It was not the only car that got stuck over the course of the weekend, but it was the only one I had to deal with directly.)

Site crew, meanwhile, wear red caps, and get referred to as "redhats" and "redcaps" fairly interchangeably. This event just gone I wound up moonlighting for one of the sub-departments, which ended up with the head-of-dept joking about giving me the spare red hat they've got lying around waiting for someone to claim it.

The reasons I did not in fact want the spare red hat were both varied and numerous:

  1. there is someone else on the GOD team who is doing a lot more work with Site than I am, so if one of us is going to get the hat it should be them;
  2. the spare red hat uses Velcro to vary the size; A had just acquired a set of buckle-adjusted blue caps that it transpires I can make work with Bog Mummy and that don't eat my hair anything like as much, and I am Never Going Back;
  3. people might think I know how to answer redcap questions.

HOWEVER. It OCCURRED TO ME (in part because one of the things some crew do is decorate their caps with patches) that I could probably find or make a patch of a red cap suitably sized to sew onto my Proper Official blue hat.

... and then I discussed this idea with a few people and there was Lots Of Enthusiasm, AND THUS:

a simplified drawing of a red baseball cap adorned with the PD logo

(Base image via a variety of sources, only one of which specifies CC BY-NC, plus the Official Logo Vector File, and subsequently manipulated in Inkscape.)

Because it's actually very easy to vary the colours, I also mocked up a blue version -- I was intending to suggest that GOD give the out to some of the redhats who regularly help us out, and then Adam went I WANT TWO. TO PUT ON THINGS. THAT ARE MINE. so apparently we're doing that now.

(Conversion from SVG to actual physical object is being achieved via the wizardry of yet another crew member. Photos to follow...)

Growing. Most of the baby plants survived being abandoned for a week -- I've lost all of my Paper Lantern chillis but I've just checked my seed storage and those are one of the ones I haven't used all my seeds for, so now I just get to decide whether I want to try again this year (expecting to overwinter indoors, with no particular expectation of fruit) or leave it til next year...

I have no idea what the tomatoes that were growing enthusiatically in my pots of yacรณn actually are but I have hauled them out and stuck them in the ground and we'll see what happens. My broad beans are all doing extremely satisfactorily so far, by my standards. Nothing doing yet with the P. edulis or the celery seeds, but oh well, I'm not in any particular hurry for them. Cherry is working its way up to being properly in blossom, ditto redcurrant; jostaberry is very clearly thinking quite hard about actually making berries and indeed at this juncture has lots of proto-berries! Blueberry has not yet had a strop about being moved from the patio to the fruit cage and otherwise neglected, but I really should attempt to get around to feeding it.

I have not yet managed to get squash started, and that should probably be a relatively high priority for tomorrow.

Observing. MANY BIRDS (see Barking Park). A very sleek and well-fed fox at the allotments. I think I have worked out where in the hedge the coal tits are nesting. Masses of riotously ornamental cherry. And a whole lot of exuberant spring flowers misc, which delighted me when I was out running errands earlier this week. :)
