(very scrappy recipe, sorry)

2 onions
3 cloves garlic
1 tasty dried red chilli (very fruity, really quite hot)
black pepper, ground cinnamon, ground cumin, ground coriander
2 sensibly-sized sweet potatoes
1 litre tomato passata
a lump of really dark chocolate
a bell pepper
one can each of sweetcorn, kidney beans, butter beans, haricot beans, flageolet beans
olive oil

Saute onions and garlic (chopped smallish) with chilli and other spices until soft. Meanwhile peel and chop the sweet potato into smallish lumps (approx 1cm cubes if you're intending to burrito the thing) and chuck them in as you go along. Once all the sweet potato's in and has had a chance to make friends with the oil and warm up a bit, dump on the tomato passata (and rinse the tetrapaks/tins/whatever out with hot water that you then dump into the pan - they can then go straight in the recycling & you've got more tomato-flavoured liquid).

As the sweet potato's getting soft enough to be palatable, dump in the chocolate (I probably used about 20g of v dark cooking chocolate?), the finely-diced bell pepper, all the beans, and let heat through. It is now food that goes on things.

My mom always does the thing where you rinse out the cans & dump them in too, heh.

Nommmm I don't cook w/sweet potatoes nearly as often as I should. This sounds v. tasty!

This also reminds me I have a recipe for cocoa-coconut chili that is amazing but somehow I haven't made it (either in its book-form or in any approximation/"inspired by" form) for years, what.

My usual chilli involves mushrooms seared on a really high heat for texture, onions, garlic, tomatoes in some form, various kinds of beans, dried soy mince (just added to the pan, with added stock/rinse-water for it to soak up), dried chillis, chilli sauce and a good dollop of reggae reggae sauce as well as any umami stuff I can find (usually soy sauce) and some dark chocolate. I also cook the mushroom/bean/tomato/soy mince on a long slow simmer so all the flavours blend.

I'm going to try adding some roasted sweet potato to it next time!

There are so many excellent things you can do with them. I made something involving mushrooms, caramelised onions, wholegrain mustard and gnocchi tonight and it was delicious.

Yummmmm. And that is even with me being skeptical of mustard :p

That's a lot of beans! I presume we're in feeds several/lasts several meals territory. I hadn't thought of tomato and sweet potato as a thing that goes, may have to experiment.

No luck searching for the "tomato-sweet potato-peanut stew" thing - when I didn't find it by following the food tag* I figured the best option was searching for peanut as the least common ingredient, but zilch (well a couple of references to things that involved peanuts, but none with sweet potatoes or tomatoes). OTOH have grabbed a mushroom stroganoff recipe as I've a load of mushrooms to use up :)

*That's a lot of recipes!

Thanks, though currently stuffed courtesy of leek risotto with chicken breast and Parma ham. Helpings at my Saturday lunch place are usually a little stingy, this would have been a large meal with just the risotto, never mind a large lump of chicken on top (and cheaper than the burger I was planning to have!)
