Fascinating conference is fascinating. (This gives you some idea of where my academic interests lie!)

And the registration fee is about a hundred quid, for my purposes.

How cheeky would it be to write to my tutor and Director of Studies asking if they know of any bodies that might make me a grant? I know I'm not going to get anything out of the University or Department; college has some funds that might cover it, if I pitch the polite request right; I'm not really sure where else to look.

Relatedly, plotting for SURF continues apace. I've identified this guy's research group as the one I'd like to do a placement with, and it turns out that one of their PhD students did her undergrad at Cambridge (hurrah for talking to people in the department, the old boys' network, etc). So, step the next: arrange to be given her e-mail address by my ex-supervisor (seems slightly politer than just grabbing it off the Internet) and sound her out about how interested the lab will be in giving me a placement (this is ex-supervisor's suggestion)...

As for my third-year project, I actually did a bit of it this morning. Okay, it was mostly the colouring-in step, but nonetheless I did some project work, came up with some more questions, consolidated my understanding of what was going on, etc.

And to continue the science theme, this bit of research (probably NSFW) won an Ig Nobel this year. I am particularly tickled by the video linked at the end of the paper, which is set to the LEAST APPROPRIATE MUSIC EVER. (That is not, incidentally, a challenge.)
