Hello everybody!

I know we've just had a string of really big love memes, but a comment floated past on my reading list today and I thought: yes.

In particular, someone was expressing a desire for a "not a darkroom orgy" meme for Valentine's Day: not because they don't intend to participate in the local darkroom, and not because they think there's anything wrong with the darkroom, but just because they'd like a dedicated space for something that isn't quite that. And, well, it can be a rough time of year for people, especially with the message that monogamous heterosexual relationships are the most important kind of relationship, so I think a healthy dose of respect and love might be no bad thing. <3

This post will close to new nominations on the evening (GMT) of Sunday the 17th, but I intend to keep unscreening comments to threads for as long as they come in!

This week or two, I've been really impressed by how you've been approaching shitty (hah) workplace situations with humour rather than the kind of wailing & gnashing of teeth I'm using at the moment!

More broadly, your letters-to-self about morning routine/to-do lists are a really spectacular exercise in self-compassion, and they always boot me into doing Something that will make my morning less grim - thank you.

&, of course, I love your thinky-thoughts whenever you have time to write them up. <3

On first meeting, kaberett struck me as impressively sharp, articulate, interesting, kind, strongly present as themselves, possessed of a well-defined sartorial style which very much suits them, and a nice person to hug. Continued acquaintance via the internets does not provide further data on absolutely all these virtues but has been strongly confirmatory of all those the medium allow.

I am in a position to confirm all of the above.

Moreover, they've compelled me, in the gentlest way, and less late in life than I otherwise would have, to reevaluate everything I ever tacitly assumed concerning gender, which has made me a better and more comfortable person, presumably with infinitesimal yet non-negligible consequences to the betterment of society as a whole.

i've only met them IRL once (and they were very friendly to a random friend of a friend who was feeling a bit nervous and overwhelmed at a big noisy gathering - and spoke thoughtfully about all sorts of things including shared health/disability issues)
Online i find they are deeply thoughtful, generous with their ideas and support, funny, interesting about many subjects particularly cooking and ROCKS. And they do many things that make the world better place

rysmiel is near kin to me in ways there isn't good language for. It's not romantic, and it's not Platonic exactly, not as people normally employ the term. We're close in ways that are intensely physical and embodied and emotionally rich.

We have an affinity which seems almost miraculous sometimes, although we're in many ways very different in personality. We also put in a lot of time and effort to making absolutely sure we understand eachother, explaining and clarifying and trying to convey our thoughts and states of mind as well as can be achieved with words and listening.

rysmiel has been making me wiser and more joyful for a decade now, and I have tens of thousands of words of email draft ongoing to convey even more nuance of exactly what they mean to me.

I love you, dear friend.

I'm pretty sure I've been aware of and admiring you for years and years and years as someone who prefers gender-neutral pronouns online - you were such a big deal to me and I never said anything ;)

A person I have glimpsed, online, and in person - once - at a wedding; but much can be seen in a glimpse and a picture fits together from the pieces, glimpses, and partial conversations, of people's lives enriched, deeply and beautifully, by knowing rysmiel.

Rysmiel has been part of my life for over a decade, and one of the best things about this is the way they pay attention, and make an effort to see me. Somehow, despite the ways in which we're quite different people, there are a lot of congruences, areas where we may start in different places but wind up with approaches that work well together.

I'm really happy you are so well loved. When I first met you I kind of wrote you off as one of those annoying, self-important geeks, but I've come to realise that's mostly protective camouflage. I am delighted by the deconstruction of Heinlein, & his art is beautiful: bare trees are exactly what I love best about this time of year, so seeing them beautifully & creatively reproduced is exactly what I wanted on my way to bed. It's sort of traditional to compliment people who are gorgeous and fantastically intelligent and absurdly talented in all sorts of directions by jokingly complaining that it's unfair for one person to have so many great qualities. Except in your case you've dealt with more than enough hardships in life that I can't even joke about envying you. I'm seriously amazed that you manage to handle all you have to cope with, and work incredibly, superhumanly hard at your job, and bring up three frighteningly impressive children. And you still have time for acts of incredible generosity, whether favours for friends or volunteering.

For me personally, you made my wedding wonderful by not only offering to play music, but dealing with my hopelessness around communication, and being so well prepared that you were able to go ahead in spite of tech problems at the venue. There aren't words emphatic enough for how grateful I am for all of that.

I really really enjoy talking to you, I always learn something. On a very literal level I adore your voice, too.
