Reading. Ancillary Justice, Ann Leckie. Things I have greatly upset myself thinking about: the AU where One Var shot all three Anaander Mianaai, instead of shooting Awn and then an Anaander. Or, even worse, the AU where One Var shot all three Anaander after shooting Awn. Things I have squealed out loud in delight about: the brief moment in that passage where Justice of Toren (or at least One Esk Nineteen, recounting it) thinks of one of Anaander's bodies as it, the pronoun for ancillaries.
Ancillary Sword, Ann Leckie. Comfort rereads in full swing, why do you ask.
(I am torn between inhaling the new Murderbot the moment it comes out, and saving it for after submission...)
Writing. ~2.5k more words of chapter 5 (not including figure captions...), which is now back with my supervisors, subsequent to which I have gritted my teeth and ploughed most of the way through pulling together the PDF of the GCA paper I'm being nudged about. (I had intended to leave it til the week after this one coming, but then decided to see how far I could get through it before sending the e-mail saying "hahaha not yet", and now all -- "all" -- I gotta do is check it compiles and contains the correct figures, so...)
Playing. Horn. Dragons.
Cooking. Aubergine kuku (Ottolenghi). We were both honestly kind of dubious about this, but it was great (even without the parsley, which A, bless him, Disdains, and with inadequate aubergine because we accidentally bought one instead of three) and we're going to be doing it again. Excellent with fancy rice. Hurrah for a speculative tub of barberries bought at massive reduction in the Before Times. Will enter the rotation.
Second attempt at butternut squash tart, this time much more satisfactorybecause I followed a recipe for the dairy-and-egg bit of the filling.
A further experiment with profiterole recipes (this being Felicity Cloake's How to make the perfect... series). I thought I had followed the instructions fairly precisely but alas only one of them rose properly, and also that is too much salt. ON THE UPSIDE: used up most of the double cream as needed it and some leftover cardamom sugar and some slightly dubious chocolate (winding up with cardamom-fig-and-port chocolate as a topping). Another attempt perhaps forthcoming.
Oh! And green peppers go well in the black pepper tofu dish. So that's a good way to use them up, also.
Exploring. A friend's allotment! On a glorious cloudless day! OUTDOORS. Promptly filled with enthusiasm for my own allotment, which I have equally promptly... not gone to! because I'm drowning in thesis! but soon.
Observing. IN ADDITION TO the bats and the squirrel and the fox and the robin and the coaltits: a peacock butterfly! At aforementioned allotment. Peacocks are, for Reasons, my favourite, so I was and indeed am proper delighted.
