vital functions
Nov. 15th, 2020 11:55 pmReading. The Scottish Boy, Alex de Campi. I ended up staying up suuuuuper late last Sunday finishing this. Definitely better once I'd settled into Mediaeval Fantasyland; definitely My Id; will reread.
Tear Tracks, Malka Older. A short story and a reread: I couldn't quite remember whether I'd read it before until I was far enough in that I had might as well finish. Mixed feelings: on the one hand I found it moving, and on the other hand I was Annoyed by the miscommunication/framing that set up the emotional manipulation that made it moving, so.
Fire Logic, Laurie J. Marks. I bounced off this hard when I first tried it a while ago, like, within the first chapter or two, but decided to give it another go; I'm making better progress this time though I'm still not sure I care much about anyone yet.
I have also sorted myself out to have Reading Page By Date open in a tab so I can slowly work my way through catching up, which has reduced my anxiety some.
Writing. Urgh. Graphic Design Is Not My Passion, but also I have started rewriting the most recent chapter I got feedback on. It is a slog.
Watching. CXG S01E17. Valencia is still autistic! Everyone is very heterosexuals! WHAT good songs.
BIONICLE: Mask of Light, to indulge my cousins. It's available on YouTube in high def but we couldn't get the subtitles to subtitle, so I found it sufficiently exhausting that I went to have a nap once we were done, and also it was INCOMPREHENSIBLE and plausibly incoherent.
I liked the crab, though.
Listening. TMA 187. I probably have feelings about this but they're still sort of swooshing. Looks like I was at least a bit wrong about Martin having power over Jon, though! And -- oh, okay, no, I did like the set-up of "for all it was superficially stupid of Jon to enter The Spiral, he really did have to in order to invoke The Eye without Helen just vanishing, nice set-up that".
Playing. Dragons dragons dragons.
Eating. Biriyani and curries made last Sunday! For most of the week! Plus a squash thing, plus Freezer Sticky Toffee Pudding, plus another small handful of tomatoes from the allotment.
Growing. I once again got ferried to the allotment by A. Things done were mostly tidying: moving all the bamboo and the terracotta into the greenhouse, plus a bit of watering and feeding the bin, plus a small handful of raspberries picked and eaten in situ.
At home, the basil is dead (why do I always kill sweet basil, I don't Get It), the lemon tree has been chemically treated (and needs potting up), and six packs of chilli seeds have arrived.
Observing. Last Sunday night (well, Monday morning), while Staying Up Too Late Reading, I heard what I initially (sleepily) parsed as Insomniac Pigeon (And Furious About It) but eventually twigged was a tawny owl! So that was exciting.
Bonus owl content: the RSPB's recording of the long-eared owl is DEEPLY undignified and I'm pretty sure it needs oiling, and also, MAN SHARES APARTMENT WITH FAMILY OF HUGE OWLS. EXCELLENT YouTube content, highly recommended, I continue to understand just enough spoken Dutch to wind up convincing myself I've somehow forgotten how to speak German (it's got English subtitles), and the follow-up video is also great. A+ owl content; exactly what the internet was invented for.
