I went through a painful process of learning to accept ugly scientific illustrations in my work. It HURTS me. But failure to complete things fast hurts even more in the longer term as it takes away my freedom to do more cool stuff instead.
Would it be viable to accept minimum standard thesis graphics with a promise to upgrade them for any post-defence paper submissions?
