Good: I HAVE AN IRISH PASSPORT, with no further wrangling about paperwork and evidence and my godmother's work landline!
Bad: it's in my full name, not my use name.
?????: they... misspelled my middle name.

I think this means I get to have the fight with them about leaving out my saint and family names essentially for free, buuuuut I'm going to need to check the paperwork on that.

I'm trying to figure out just how much space is on that page or how small the type is for Irish passports. Saint *and* family names can be...quite a bit.

It's actually permissible - if you hold only an Irish passport - for it to display only your use name, leaving out your saint and family names! This is very useful for e.g. getting people to CALL YOU BY THE RIGHT NAME when they NEED YOUR ATTENTION because you are TRAVELLING (or had to provide proof of ID to access healthcare, or whatever), and coincidentally is also useful for my brand of Unhelpful Tran, wherein I've kept my saint and family names (because I don't actually dislike them, I just dislike how other people gender them) and stuck a third name in in the middle (partly because Irish naming traditions but mostly because the rhythm's nicest that way).

Which means everyone WILL insist on calling me by my saint name, which is very tedious.

HOWEVER, the Irish are in principle unwilling to issue a passport in a name that doesn't match the name in any foreign passports. THIS IS RELEVANT BECAUSE the passport they've issued me... doesn't match... the name... in my foreign passport.....

... so I get to write back and say "look, appreciate it massively, but (a) you've typoed my family name and (b) what do I have to do to get you to leave my saint and family names off, I will perfectly happily cancel my UK passport if that's what's required, they just won't let me have only my yard name displayed without renouncing my saint and family &c, which I'm unwilling to do because TRADITION."

So (1) the wallet the passport came in had a big notice on it being all "CHECK FOR ERRORS, IF THERE ARE ANY THIS PASSPORT ISN'T VALID, GET IN TOUCH TO SORT IT OUT" with... no information on how to get in touch... and (2) as far as I can tell my options are "the phone" or "the webchat", but the embassy's near work and I'm going in next week for some meetings anyway, so... shrug??? emoji?????

I’m going to be the embarrassing person and ask why you’re getting an Irish passport because I unfortunately cant remember, sorry.

That’s annoying that they messed up and that you have to do more name/people wrangling

Because the other passport I hold is a UK passport, and the UK is - at some point - probably - going to leave the EU, and actually I quite like my EU citizenship, thanks. So given that I'm also an Irish citizen, I'm... getting myself set up with the relevant paperwork.

(I've also been donating to the Abortion Support Network every month since I submitted the paperwork to get my birth formally registered, and am learning Irish, as sort of bare-minimum Contributions Of Citizenship.)

Congrats on the progress! And I didn't realize you had a confirmation name: I don't think I realized you'd been Confirmed, and am slightly surprised. (And I'm curious what saint you picked, though suspect you won't want to say because gender things, which is reasonable.)

Welcome to being Irish (officially like if also misspelled) - I wonder if you gave up UK passport, got Irish one in correct name and then regained UK passport again, would they give you the UK one in the right name since your other official documentation has it on it?

Alternatively ignore that since I'm sure you've reviewed name changing officialdom more ways than I can count.

But welcome to being Irish! (learning the language is not a requirement but it can be fun)

(1) I already learn languages for fun, and (2) since putting in my FBR application I've been donating to ASN regularly and, well, learning Irish; I do in fact want to Be A Good Citizen, so.

(3) Yep, offering to cancel the UK passport is on the list of options. :)
