kaberett: a watercolour painting of an oak leaf floating on calm water (leaf-on-water)

1. I have been aware, over the past few weeks, of a tendency toward negativity and cynicism, arising from and being reinforced by circumstance. And I noticed it, and I caught it, and not only have I been able to remember that I have established habits to aid reframing and shifting of focus but I am -- thankfully, and gratefully -- able to employ those skills.

2. Yesterday I had lunch at the Treasury with a friend of many years' standing (we've known each other since we were both around 10, in fact, though we dropped out of contact not long after meeting and didn't get back in touch until we ended up at the same sixth form), which was sort of charming and surreal; I make a better apple-and-pear crumble, I think, but the planting in the courtyard outside the canteen is intelligently and thoughtfully done and the camellia were excellent. (We have arranged, in principle, to visit Kew and to go to Vanilla Black together; we caught up with one another's lives a little.)

3. This also involved ambling through Green Park and St James' Park in the brilliant sunshine and the air as crisp as it tends to get in London, enjoying the greenery and the horses and the lake. It was decidedly restorative.

4. I have faith in my ability to weather tomorrow morning's medical appointment despite its potential for stress. I know what I want, I know how to ask for it, and I know where I'm likely to wobble and how to pick up the pieces.

5. I recently completed Blood, Marriage, Wine & Glitter by S. Bear Bergman, as loaned me by an adoptive sibling, and had a lot of feelings about it (to the extent of trying to work out whether I want a physical or digital copy for the highlighting I want to do); I'm reading a Victorian novel loaned me by P; and next up is Wicked, a copy of which I acquired in a charity shop in the village when down before the new year. (I have also managed to read a lot of short fiction, and have a lot more open in tabs, which is also pleasing.)

6. I'm really pleased with various aspects of contributing to Dreamwidth, at the moment: a steady turnover of bugs suitable for beginners to fix, a steady stream of pages getting added to the wiki, progress on some large long-term projects I'm invested in, and a small sense of satisfaction at the work I personally am doing.

7. Ann Leckie's tumblr is a perpetual source of delight (today it has featured more peeps (peep peep peep peep) and an in-depth discussion of the French translation of Ancillary Justice.

8. A let me paint him exciting colours getting on for a fortnight ago, where by "exciting" we mean "he ended up a mix of purple and blue because have you met me", and by "him" I do of course here mean "his hair". The past couple of days he's let me experiment with plaiting it; I have been enjoying the effect (and also getting a small thrill, if feeling somewhat ridiculous about same, every time someone compliments his hair where I can hear it: this was the first time I've dyed someone's hair and I was Doing An Insecurity about it).

9. A, walking in the door brandishing two envelopes: "Gosh, the Royal Mint are awfully spammy." Me: "... well, they do have to make money somehow." (I actually realised what I was about to say before I said it so lampshaded it a bit more than that, but I do still appear to think I'm terribly funny, so here you go, Dreamwidth, have an anecdote.)

10. I have an enormous pile of memory foam and duvets to nest in, and I am now going to somewhat belatedly do precisely that in anticipation of a long day out of the house tomorrow.

Hurray for good things :-)

Having wolfed down The Nearest Exit May Be Behind You I've had Blood, Marriage, Wine & Glitter on my 'sometime soon' list for a while. Do I want to bump it up to 'really soon'?
