[ankle] no surgery for meeeeee!!!!
Apr. 16th, 2026 12:59 amMRI shows clearly that there Have Been injuries, but also that (give or take some ongoing fluid around the joint) they've healed (as much as they're going to); clinical examination shows persistent laxity/instability.
I get the impression that if it had been a complete rupture, reconstruction would have been recommended. However, it's apparently unlikely that future reinjuries would cause deterioration or cumulative damage in any way that mattered for reconstruction -- so given that I've only had one significant reinjury in the 5.5 years since starting physio, I'm to try using a brace during high-risk activities. If I'm still having significant life-impacting problems at that point, then we revisit surgery as a concept; if I'm not then... I keep using the brace during high-risk activities and go merrily on my way.
Given that the Significant Reinjury last year was in fact on an occasion when I'd thought "hmm, I am very tired, I am not sure I'm actually safe to be Leaving The House and Doing Things on Surfaces"... that's enough forewarning for me to, you know, stick a brace on. So. With great relief and jubilation: NO SURGERY (in the near future).
(I am definitely having some Raised Eyebrow feelings about how this medic interacted with me when I was an NHS Sunday clinic vs a private evening clinic but hey, I never have to see them again! And that's also data I'm pleased to have.)
