I want this general idea of ring-holder (ring tray style of thing also acceptable) only smaller, in that I want to be storing max 18 rings.

Specifically, I am very much appreciating the ring splints [personal profile] ewt loaned me (per previous), I am going to be acquiring a full set of my own, and I want to have something I can put them in when I'm not wearing them such that order and orientation are preserved even if I e.g. put glasses down clumsily on bedside table. I also want something in a form factor I can easily stash in an overnight bag. I am failing at search terms and would be very grateful for input.

(I've considered tackle boxes and will get one if that's what it comes down to, but I'd slightly rather something that will - as I say - preserve orientation: which way up I want each ring to be on each joint follows no obvious pattern, and having to work it out from scratch via "it doesn't actually fit on my finger this way round" is non-optimal not least because that's a route that leads to... hyperextending joints.)

I have a curious--would putting it on a ring storage where each hand is represented not work for you?

Ooh, a puzzle!

US links, but maybe you will find them of use:
https://www.michaels.com/darice-black-velvet-ring-tray/10230211.html (I added "18 slot" to the search string to get that one I think... Surprisingly few results! But it seems to be about the same size as a tray for more rings - next up - just with more space in between...)(no int'l shipping from here alas)

Meh Amazon, but PURPLE and perhaps at least will be more search-term-fodder? (Not that people-who-are-not-me are necessarily as yay-purple or boo-hiss-Amazon so take as you will :p )

(Okay self time to get back to work now >_> )

Wondering if some sort of comb-like arrangement could do as an alternate - flat strip as a base and five verticals for fingers+thumb, *2. Potentially DIY-able from simple components, though at the cost of looks.

That first one says it fits 36 rings, but I think in practice it would comfortably fit 18-24. We use something similar to display jewellery at workplace, and anything bigger than a band often obscures the slots either side (the rings displayed in the photo are using 4 of the 6 rows). With ring splints, I imagine they will span 3-4 slots vertically, so you need something that is at least 5 columns across.

If you can find an empty case of the dimensions, looks like could be a craft project with 1 layer foam, 1 layer velvet, glue velvet to foam and foam to bottom of case, then slits to place the rings exactly so. If up for craft project.

There is a simple version of such a craft project (no velvet) here:

Could blu-tack (or similar) work? Because you could take rings off, and then stick them down on a rough hand outline, so you could preserve orientation. And then the blu-tack can be squidged up and put in a smallish container for transport.

Would inclusion of a photo of each hand, with all the splints on correctly, help?

I have been thinking about this too.

I am thinking of a piece of board (cardboard?), with bits of cloth that are glued/stitched down at one end and velcro/button/something down at the other. One bit of card for each hand, put them in a case offset enough so the rings don't get squished, fasten together. You have to remember which way up you put them but one fabric strip per finger out to keep them from getting jumbled. Could use elastic?

I haven't gotten around to making such a thing, yet.

Also these are a different thing and would be annoying for ring splints but maybe helpful for other applications:
Botherit the link won't paste but I am thinking of a thing called "grid it" made by coccoon.

Also also: some people put a dot of nail varnish on one end of each splint, different colour for each finger, to help avoid confusion. If it goes on the inside it doesn't have to show much.

seems like search terms would be "ring storage box", "ring organizer", or possibly "cufflink box" / "cufflink case".

here are a few I found (which idk what your price point or shipping desires are but anyway they are things I found with the above search terms, and you might be able to do something similar if you got a ring tray and stuck it in an existing box)

cufflink box

handmade wood ring/cufflink box which ofc only ships to the US but is here for a demo

no problem! I have been poking yarns for that celestial shawl to keep myself occupied today, so it was not much trouble at all. <3

ETA: also it lets me flex my historian-research-muscles of "what is the right keyword to get the database to give me what I want" and "how to combine the search terms optimally"

one of my goals post-moving is to get JSTOR access again, because how else will I fact-check random news articles or go down rabbit holes of curiosity?

My beloved Ewt stores the splints overnight on a pair of claret-coloured velvet hands.

Let me run that by you again: the bedside decorations include two beautiful, graceful, claret-coloured fuzzy severed human hands.

Whatever helps you sleep at night, I guess... But severed hands are maybe not quite the thing for you.
