In that it was the set of readings about how it is easier to pass a camel through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven, and so there was a lengthy break before the homily in order to pass out and fill in forms to set up standing orders to the parish...

It could have been worse, it could have been the moneylenders in the temple, but still....

I remember hearing a sermon about how people (in this very church!) were giving money to charity when the church had missionaries in the field who were doing God's work and desparately needed Christian funding.

I still remember the sermon from the archdeacon at the very Anglo-Catholic church I used to sing at, about how "give away all that you have and follow me" doesn't really mean that.

I feel there's some sort of metaphor here along the lines of radioactive waste. Great wealth has a corrupting effect on the soul, and hence is best handed over to theologically trained professionals who can contain it or dispose of it as safely as possible...

If it were real (within the context of the story) rather than just a flimsy excuse offered by greedy religious establishments, then I feel as if it might fit quite well into the Chalionverse.
