Mild amusement

(It appears to be the case that I've been much less unrelentingly miserable around these parts this last week that I thought I had been. Nice try, cognitive distortions, and I see what you are doing.)

Things I have been doing this afternoon:

• repotting plants (specifically some purple basil and Alpine strawberries I picked up from the Kew students' produce sale this lunchtime, with many thanks to aella_irene for dragging me out)


• photographing yarn and subsequently getting started with rewinding it from skeins into centre-pull balls


• painting my nails (which I haven't done with any degree of seriousness for, oh, well over a decade ignoring a brief flirtation with trying out sponge gradients three years ago, i.e. I did it once)

... all of which are going surprisingly well. The basil's perked up; the strawberries... might want a bit more water, actually; the photographs (destined for Ravelry, natch) are less good than I'd like but still better than I might expect and perfectly adequate; and apparently at some point in the last few years I've become competent at doing my right hand despite utter lack of practice. (I am extremely grateful to have friends who can loan me the things I need for the effects I'm after without even particularly noticing, by which I mean "I am using six different polishes so help me no way was I buying this shit myself".)

It's a black base, and then six of my fingers just have matte on top of that, but the other four (once I'm finished with the easy bits) are going to get purple sparkly galaxies sponged on. (So: black, three shades of sparkly purple, matte top coat, standard top coat. It is very convenient that me_and is super into purple, I'm just saying.)

Photographing yarn is always suprisingly tricky - i guess because it's a mass of shadows and highlights without any big obvious focus points.Yay! for getting results you are pleased with.
