Fandoms nominated: Strong Female Protagonist, and both of Benjanun Sriduangkaew's fictional universes.
Not nominated because I know y'all have got this: Imperial Radch.
Things I have not nominated that are not listed that I'd like to see: Dicebox (I so could not write for Dicebox), 10 Things I Hate About You, A Knight's Tale, Labyrinth
Things I have spotted in the unofficial spreadsheet that I would like to write for: Tiffany Aching series, Orphan Black, ... yeah okay I'd probably write Sharing Knife stuff, Old Man's War series, Imperial Radch series, Blow Me (One Last Kiss), His Dark Materials, The Scorpio Races (!!!!!!!), The Middleman (!!!)

Date: 2014-09-26 12:04 pm (UTC)- the Archive Of Our Own (AO3) is indeed a fanfic/work archive, set up by fans for fans, as a project of the Organisation for Transformative Works (OTW)
- ... there is Politics about the OTW/AO3, ask me somewhere more private sometime and I will Tell The Parts Of The Story I Know :-p
- Yuletide is an annual rare-fandom fanwork exchange (rare fandom currently, I believe, defined as <100 works in that fandom on the AO3, which: Politics) that's been running for absolutely ages, founded by one of the AO3's founders
- ... the AO3 hosts Yuletide
- it is basically a Secret Santa with obscure fandoms (including shit like "Octopus ran away with my camera" and "the John Lewis Christmas telly ad")
SO
IN SUM, THE WAY YULETIDE WORKS
is that you go "these! these rare fandoms! these are ones I want to see fic for!"
Once the nominations period has closed, you get to comb through the list of all the shite that's been nominated and decide (1) which set of things you want to request fic for (and some prompts), and (2) which set of things you're willing to write for (no limit on this one! you can have a lucky dip bag that is a huge list of every fandom ever to help with matching).
THEN once the requests period has finished, you get your ASSIGNMENT and spend the next couple of months writing a piece of fiction >1000 words in length for one of your recipient's prompts, and submit it to the Yuletide collection on the AO3. Shenanigans may ensue, especially if you know your recipient, which you might well do because small fandoms, and the deal is you probably don't want to get tooooooo many of the other people in the fandom to betaread the thing else all the fun of guessing games vanishes. The fic goes live on the 25th of December and remains anonymous untiiiiiiiiiil New Year's Day?
There are additional rules for what happens if you don't manage to get the fic wrote
but that is an outline!

Date: 2014-09-26 02:05 pm (UTC)I'd used the AO3 on and off for a couple of years, mostly for a few specific authors and a few individual recommendations, but two things changed that. First Christmas 2011 when I was very ill with pregnancy and feeling very sorry for myself, and the vast treasure that was Yuletide helped greatly to cheer me up. Then about 5 months later, Avengers Assemble released, I fell in love hard with the whole fandom (previously I'd basically known about Hulk) and there were literally hundreds of new fics a day, so I very rapidly learned how to find My Sort Of Thing among the deluge.
I'm basically sublimely unaware of AO3/OTW politics and happy to stay that way until I have effort to engage in them. I adore the mere fact of its existence, and the culture it (mostly) seems to foster of community and gift-economy and (mostly) constructive comments. To the point that the one time I did see really negative comments on a fic I was completely gobsmacked (and er, made friends with the author as a result of my wtf was that? supportive responses).
Yuletide in particular has a very be-excellent-to-each-other culture, and I'm quite excited about being part of that again this year.

Date: 2014-09-26 02:22 pm (UTC)Short version: "Fandoms will be approved if their total number of stories on AO3 and fanfiction.net, added together, is less than 1000. A story must be in English, complete, and at least 1000 words long to be considered in that total."
Long version: the Eligibility Rules.
(But yes, lots of Politics.)
I knew my recipient last year, the first time I've had that happen, and it was even more unexpected because we were matched on the least obscure fandom I'd offered. I was all AHAHAHAHA YES I CAN WORK WITH THIS.
