If ever anyone needs convincing that real-name policies don't work to enforce civil behaviour, I'd hope that the comments on this post would make the point (protip: never read the comments). Honourable mention for this one goes to Richard Steven Hack, who is not only posting under the name he uses on Twitter, Myspace and Facebook, but whose name takes you to his professional website.

I'm assuming you mean the comments which have been removed by the Moderator? Because I can't find anything objectionable there apart from the tiredness of old computing jokes. (Ah, I notice that some of the removed comments were apparently by a 'Richard', presumably the one you mention.)

On the one hand, yes. On the other hand, he's now complaining on twitter about the ban - where the comments I saw were along the lines of "... please tell me nobody ever wonders why there aren't more women in this field" and "I hope his customers see that he's been doing this". Which. Er.

(For reference, the joke that actually made me nauseous was one explicitly about sexually exploiting insecure women. There were many others that were sexist and appalling.)

The moderator did say that other followup comments had been removed as well.

(Incidentally, I would put quotes round 'joke' when applied to such sexist material. I don't find it amusing, it may be an attempted 'joke' but it planted its face firmly in the road and doesn't deserve to be acknowledged as humour...)

What's cheering is that the offensive comments have been removed by moderator overnight, with firmly expressed warnings. Moderation makes all the difference.

To that particular space, yes - but he's now complaining about it on twitter, which, well, more evidence that real name policies aren't a deterrent, etc.

Nothing deters a determined idiot, except being banned from everywhere (including life). I do hope his employer gets to see his online remarks.

He looks self-employed (and some people are self-employed because nobody will have them, rather than through any entrepreneurial spirit).

My comment that got removed because it related to the now-vaped offensive material was wondering out loud how his customers might react.

Exactly: a real name policy didn't make a difference and I completely agree with you there. I was just commenting how pleased I was that offensive stuff was being moderated: he can go have his "free speech" somewhere else.
