This is very cool. Mt Erebus in particular sounds wonderful. Scientific progress goes glop! Lava lakes in ice!
Coincidence: I'm currently reading Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything, and I'm up to the part about volcanoes. I'm currently reading about how Yellowstone is due to erupt Real Soon Now and there isn't (or wasn't at time of publication, 2003) a crisis plan, and just exactly how bad it'll be when it does blow. Suffice it to say that I was the sort of kid who would have had nightmares about killing polar bears, and I'm really glad I didn't know anything about volcano ash when I was 11.
(you're probably too young for that because the first one came out when I was in year 7 oh dear)
Oh dear indeed. The first one came out when I was in my third year of uni. I was in my third year of uni when you were in year 7. When I was in year 7 it was 1993. People who were born the year I was in year 7 are 21 this year. Excuse me, I'll be over here having a mortality crisis. I'm only 33!
...Just looked at your 'what words mean' slide. Now I feel much better. If "the present" means 1st January 1950, even my mother is only four years old. "recent" is even more reassuring.
