Okay so. I am now a member of the Saison Poetry Library. This means I have a frankly overwhelming set of Pomes I Can Read and am trying to keep track of who is on my List To Get Around To. So far I have read a pile of Mary Oliver and some Neruda. More things I want to get my act together to read (to be expanded as I think of them; not currently very awake!):
  • Borges
  • Maya Angelou collected poems borrowed March
  • Derek Walcott collected poems borrowed March
  • Audre Lorde The Black Unicorn borrowed April
  • Li-Young Lee
  • Rabbi Rachel Barenblat
  • David Whyte
  • A.E. Stallings
  • Luisa A Igloria
  • Tanikawa Shuntarō via Harold Wright or other trans.
  • Rosalie Moore
  • Mina Loy
  • Selima Hill
  • Mimi Khalvati
  • Sylvia Townsend Warner
  • Langston Hughes
  • RS Thomas No Truce with the Furies borrowed March
  • Tomas Tranströmer The Great Enigma (new & collected poems) borrowed March
  • Osip Mandelstam

Suggestions?

From a quick skim of stuff I've reposted to [community profile] poetry, see below for some of the poets I've been meaning to look into more myself; Whyte & Igloria in particular I think will sing to you. I'd also check out the poets whose poems Mary Oliver drew on for that fantastic 'Poetry Handbook' I've mentioned previously, and see if the poetry library has poetry periodicals you can check out (and let me know if there are any of those you'd recommend!) or anthologies they'd recommend. Oh! and I know listening to poetry isn't as easy for you as reading in terms of catching all the nuances, but I strongly recommend checking out the new New Yorker Poetry podcast for the discussions around the poems read - you can always revisit the poem text(s) in question afterward.

- Rabbi Rachel Barenblat ('First Step / Lech Lecha', etc.; see also her posts @ POETREE + [syndicated profile] velveteen_rabbi_feed)
- David Whyte ('The Opening of Eyes')
- A.E. Stallings ('After a Greek Proverb', etc.)
- Luisa A. Igloria (see her posts @ POETREE + [syndicated profile] via_negativa_feed)
- Tanikawa Shuntarō via Harold Wright or other trans. ('Sadness')
- Rosalie Moore ('Catalogue')
