* tight horrible ick all over my scalp and at the base of my neck
* muscles a bit of a disaster
* no obvious stabbing migraine-pain

coming down with something, wildly atypical-for-me migraine, or ~just~ overtired? PLACE BETS NOW. I am on the second day of this and I really want it to Just Not.

Coming down with something. I get that sometimes, more as I age. I know I'm about to get unwell because sounds cause nausea and my hair starts to hurt and stuff like that. Never got it as a young thing. Go take a bunch of vitamin C, just in case.

+1 on this, though it's only happened once or twice. Awful awful beyond words. Also in the "what even" category that I hope you don't experience are "abdominal migraines".

Perhaps migraines are, in fact, alien parasites bent on tormenting human hosts?

I'm not remotely qualified to place a bet, but that sounds horrendous. I hope it passes ASAP, whatever it is!

I would've said "truly nasty migraine" in a snap until that last bullet point, since my worst migraine to date felt exactly like you describe (excepting 4th bullet point - but maybe I had that and just didn't notice because blankets over head to try and block all light ever was far more pressing at the time).

Whatever it is, I hope it passes quickly - that is a horrendous state to be in! <3

So I realised after I went to bed that since I last had a migraine, my background painkiller dose has become ENORMOUS - like, paracteamol + mefenamic acid + amitriptyline, all of which can target migraines - whic is kind of leaning me towards the migraine explanation unless I end up obviously coming down with something...

So I actually only realised after I curled up miserably in bed last night that my maintenance painkiller load contains a whole bunch of stuff that targets migraines (amitriptyline, paracetamol, mefenamic acid) which might explain the minimisation of one-sided head-pain... on the other hand, I might yet be coming down with something else altogether. I guess we'll see. ;)

I'm on a maintenance daily dose of vitC and it seems to be helping in general! Will add some more in, though.

I would put my bet on either migraine prodrome or acephalgic migraine. (Disclaimer: IANAD, I get both of those)

I seem to be doing much better today (hungry again!), which also suggests migraine, yeah. Bugger. I was quite enjoying having one obvious easily-avoidable trigger...
