amusement of the day
Mar. 21st, 2023 10:35 pmI am going to be visiting my mother soon, and therefore she told me she was going to be putting a seed order in Shortly, and was there anything I wanted? There's a place in Torquay that would sell her heritage Austrian and Slovenian lettuces, some of which are green with red spots, you see...
... but she couldn't immediately remember the name -- we were on the phone for this, so once we were done and before she sent me details I shook the internet a bit and found! a seedmonger! in Devon! selling the heritage Austrian lettuce Speckled Trout!
... well it turns out it wasn't them at all, it was someone else. So there are multiple Devonshire seedmongers carrying heritage etc, which amuses me!
As for what I added to the order: red brussels sprouts and red/purple dual-use onions (which I'm intending to grow as spring onions). Not ordered: Rossa di Treviso, of which I wanted half a pack or thereabouts (it goes well in fondue, and for that matter fondue appears to be a context in which I do not mind how bitter the stuff is), because my mother already has an unopened pack! so we're going to split that instead.
But! Additionally and furthermore! The part that particularly amused me! Also not purchased: Wonderberries. Description:
Quick and easy to grow in a container, garden or green house, producing thousands of small, black, ornamental fruits which we recommend should not be eaten even though it may be recommended elsewhere online. The leaves of this plant are reputedly narcotic, and are sometimes smoked as a canabis legal-drug substitute, and they should not be used thus, and we DO NOT recommend this practice.
