Left-handed knitting is a thing but not a relevant thing; ditto the handedness is not relevant in this instance! I have now very grumpily ripped back some more and done some counting, and I've got 22 slipped stitches up one side and 23 slipped stitches up the other (this is fine) so the problem is just going to be consistency about what I pick up where, ugh. ERGO. HAVING ANOTHER TRY.
