I was surprised to discover that they were blue.
By far the most difficult and lengthy and unpleasant part of the whole procedure was trying to get a cannula into me; it wound up being third time lucky, though I will grant that neither of the first two attempts have bruised (which is not nothing!). But, right, the appointment was nominally at 14.40, and there was definitely a lot of faff involved in getting the room clear of the previous patient?
... it was gone 4 p.m. by the time we actually managed to get me onto the antibiotic drip.
Whereupon I got to lie on my back staring at the high-tech drip stand (it was a giant paperclip.) while the (small!) bag emptied itself into me, AND THEN we could FINALLY start the ACTUAL PROCEDURE.
... which was sufficiently short and straightforward that I was merrily leaving the department by about 16.35, having got dressed and proved that my bladder was willing to void and been given all the instructions about when to go directly to A&E without passing go again.
I was charmed by the wee grabby claw. I was mildly surprised that the local anaesthetic was applied as a gel from, essentially, a squeezy tube. I was absolutely baffled at the Modesty Blanket consisting of an Object that was large enough to cover me from my armpits to my feet and then some... with a careful cut-out in the middle.
The Stents were, as I say, Blue. This would have been less surprising were it not the case that, on camera, they had looked fairly unambiguously white.
Ultrasound (to keep Urology specifically happy) in 4-6 weeks, where the expectation is that Everything Will Be Fine. I'm to try to avoid developing a kidney infection over the next couple of days in particular (when I'm at relatively high risk of complications, hence the prophylactic IV antibiotics), and to be a bit gentle with myself til the end of the week.
(I also took advantage of the propensity of hospitals toward "white walls" and "bright lighting" to sort out a passport photo for my replacement Irish passport...)
We visited Ottolenghi Hampstead on the way home, and acquired Traditional Cake. For bonus points, this means I will have Cake to eat when I am allowed food again following my gastroscopy tomorrow.
SEVERAL CAKE, most of which as yet untouched:
- passionfruit cheesecake with spiced pineapple (Youtube video): juuust a touch too sweet for me, but nonetheless DELIGHTFUL
- raspberry drizzle cake (!!!!! NEW TO ME)
- Sicilian lemon, olive oil & bay cake (A PREVIOUS FAVOURITE)
- flourless orange & almond cake with chocolate ganache (cannot recall if have previously had?)
- Cooked Fruit Tart (the one I got looks plummish)
- apple and olive oil cake with maple icing (A's favourite, or one of them, at least)
PLUS A BONUS: chocolate chip and pecan cookie. for meeee to eat in the car on the way home. (though I did let A have a nibble of it.)
Extremely Looking Forward to the rest. ALAS AND WOE that we have also tiramisu in the fridge, and self-saucing passion fruit pudding to be made...
