kaberettThis morning this man bought us an enormous pile of cake from here in order to revive us halfway through our first lecture of term.
It was two hours long, and the first hour was conservation laws and partial derivatives and Gauss' theorem. We needed the cake.
But that aside: it was fun and engaging and challenging and, well, look, I'm the kind of person who giggles at this sort of thing and bookmarks it for later perusal. So a lecture on how on Earth (... as it were) one manages to set up convection cells with the aspect ratio seen in plate tectonics - complete with experiments in golden syrup! - is right up my alley.
And then I got home to find a wonderful postcard with calligraphed limericks frompseudomonas.
So all in all it's been a pretty good day. And the "what were you thinking?" e-mail the other day got an offer of a public apology in response.
(I've spent the evening feeling somewhat morose for a variety of ridiculous reasons. Lists of good things are helpful.)
