The thing I enjoy most about Dreamwidth-goes-to-conferences is, honestly, the part where I get to hang out in hotel rooms with a group of people working on making the site better and more fun, one way or another, and I'd really like to have more of that in my life. As such, I'm trying out hosting a Dreamwidth contributor event at the beginning of November.
In terms of what will be going on: I'd never written code before I got stuck into Dreamwidth development, and honestly I'm still very much a beginner at Perl, but I know roughly where things are and there'll be several people who're fluent in Perl present who can help out with specifics. I'm also pretty invested in documentation (both for developers and for end users), Support Board work, and misc organisational stuff. I've got lists of things that could do with being worked on from introductory bugs to specced-out features, and from minor site copy tweaks to entire new FAQs that need writing. I'm happy to mentor & cheerlead in any of these areas from any starting point, and I'll probably bake you a cake while you're getting things shipshape.
We have an A0 whiteboard, a square metre of tea, and lots of things to sit on. I expect there'll be some sitting-around-in-groups-hashing-out-workflows and some one-to-one mentoring and some solo work; there will be a dedicated quiet room in which conversation/interaction Does Not Happen.
Interested? Please let me know if you're thinking of attending so I know how many to expect, but it's absolutely fine if you don't make it on the day.
Interested but can't make it in person? Come hang out in the IRC channel (instructions at the link): telecommuters welcome. <3
WHEN
Concentrated on Saturday 7th November, with potential to spread tendrils into Sunday if people feel like showing up then too. Feel free to arrive from 10am.
WHERE
London, Zone 2, on the District and Picadilly lines. It's a basement flat with an unpleasant narrow flight of stairs down to the front door. If you're interested, please comment to let me know and I'll be in touch with the address.
ADDITIONAL LOGISTICS
Please bring your own machine to work on if possible. We've got a very small number of highly inconvenient spare workstations in the house, but they're spare for a reason and you don't want to use them if you can avoid it. It has been suggested to me that I should also remind people to bring with chargers. :-)
Allergens. This is a pet-free and smoke-free household. Please do not smoke at any point if you intend to return to the house, and please don't wear clothes that you've smoked in since they were last washed: I have a severe tobacco smoke allergy and I like it when I can breathe without hurting. Otherwise, we have a bit of a damp problem but it doesn't upset my lungs too horrifyingly, for calibration; and I use perfume but can not on the day if that would be helpful.
Set-up. If you think you might like to try your hand at coding, please apply for a Dreamhack. You don't have to do this in advance, but it might save some set-up on the day! You can take a look at Dev Getting Started on the wiki if you like, but everything else on there I'll be happy to talk you through on the day. If you think you'd like to do work on the wiki, again, please let me know and I'll see that you get set up in advance.
Food. I'm intending to provide a choice of large vats of vegan-by-default, gluten-free-by-default food. However, there will be egg/dairy/gluten options available and my kitchen is not nut-free. You're welcome to provide your own food or to order in; it should be eminently possible for individuals to make some use of the kitchen; please let me know if you've particular dietary restrictions or preferences and I'll do my best to accommodate (including running by you what I'm intending to make). It's okay to bring meat into the house, but you will have to take responsibility for clearing up after it.
WANT TO BRING SOMETHING other than yourself? Non-dairy milk (if you'd like soy to go in tea, for example), soft drinks, and snack-ish nibbly things would all be very welcome. :-)
