An awkward sonnet for someone who doesn't understand poetry, and an awkward apology for someone who does.

If it would make you smile, I'd call you muse:
(and only inward name myself absurd)
I'd praise your gentle kindness, as your due,
devoted wonder rich in every word--
although, for all of that, it's not quite true:

These gifts are freely given--in their way.
There's little risk in writing out my heart
for someone who'd prefer that I speak plain,
who'll trust my verses do not miss their mark.
Perhaps I'd be more honest, then, to say:

I am not brave. I do not write for those
who'll closely read and weigh up every word
rather than let my hope rest unobserved--
yet shoud it make you smile, I'll call you muse.

I think you have done a lovely job with this. There is such love but mixed with a little bit of... fear? It's a good reminder of the way love leaves us vulnerable.

Yes, apprehension and nervousness. My wording is a bit slowed under the onslaught of a cold :)

I rather love sonnets, so I enjoyed seeing this one.

I did notice that the structure wasn't quite right, but I'm unfamiliar with villanelles. So much still to learn!

I understood you weren't sneering. I know that you're not like that :)
