An awkward sonnet for someone who doesn't understand poetry, and an awkward apology for someone who does.
If it would make you smile, I'd call you muse:
(and only inward name myself absurd)
I'd praise your gentle kindness, as your due,
devoted wonder rich in every word--
although, for all of that, it's not quite true:
These gifts are freely given--in their way.
There's little risk in writing out my heart
for someone who'd prefer that I speak plain,
who'll trust my verses do not miss their mark.
Perhaps I'd be more honest, then, to say:
I am not brave. I do not write for those
who'll closely read and weigh up every word
rather than let my hope rest unobserved--
yet shoud it make you smile, I'll call you muse.
