All Souls'
Nov. 2nd, 2021 09:41 amIt is the second of November. This evening I will be lighting a candle and eating Seelenkuchen and generally quietly remembering my dead.
If you would like me to remember yours, too, I would as ever be honoured if you shared them with me.

Gwen, my nan, who was many things, including a person who threw a brick at Parliament.
Charlie, my grampy, who taught me to build Lego houses right before he died like that was the most important task he could ever have to achieve.
Ron, my grandad, who obligingly pretended to get lost in the woods so me and my sister could be brave about it.
Peter, who gave me some very good advice, taught me French very well, and actually tried to do something about me being bullied.

Date: 2021-11-02 05:30 pm (UTC)Edward Aloysius, who fed the calves each morning for as long as he could.
Vernon, who was a steadfast card player and storyteller.
Beth, who by rights should have had much longer than she did.
And all the others who left us long before what would have been a full and glorious life.

Date: 2021-11-02 11:29 pm (UTC)Maurice Bailey, MA, Headmaster of the Sixth Form College I escaped to: a quiet man, a Quaker, an example we came to respect and recognise long after we had left, of how much good can be done, and laid down as a foundation in the lives of others, quietly and carefully by the principled exercise of authority by consent. Death by heart failure.
Christopher Heffernan, Farmer in County Kildare, who took upon himself the risk of ensuring that his house and hospitality were always open to us as family, when many had told him we should not be. I remember his gentle good humour: and learned, slowly, how he had prevailed and prospered as an egalitarian and a critic of religious deference in a society where such principles were abhorrent and an invitation to ridicule and ostracision. They are less so, today, in part due to his own life and example and influence in the parishes and communities of County Kildare. Death by cancer, in 2013, shortly after our marriage.
