In the Before Times, I had sexual health check-ups and the like in Soho. Soho is conveniently just across the road from Chinatown, so after Attending Clinic I would head back over, to the Chinatown Bakery with the taiyaki conveyor belt, and I would wave a £2 coin at the person staffing it through the window (because the entrance has a couple of steps, but if you can pay in exact change then you can get four taiyaki directly off the person managing them rather than having to queue up for the till), and then I would get handed a small paper bag containing The Custard Fish Of Civic Responsibility.

These also sometimes manifest as The Dumplings Of Civic Responsibility, or The Jianbing Of Civic Responsibility, or what have you. But I specifically confused a friend last week by referring to "the custard fish of civic responsibility" out of the blue, and now I am trying to work my way up to making them.

my closest analogue is usually getting a drink at a nearby coffee shop when I take in one of the family cars for an oil change. which has less character and doesn't especially lend itself to an interesting turn of phrase.

After an extended series of double-takes, I now understood that this is not a Doctor Who reference, and there is not a Chinese dish containing fish and some form of custard, and if there was then you wouldn't be eating it because you're a vegetarian, and it's a fish-shaped food with custard filling.

This tickles me. I have tried Dean Street many times, but never the custard fish. That machine sure is mesmerising though!

Ugh I haven't had taiyaki in so long :c I did manage to acquire a pan for making them but uhhhh have yet to figure out if there's a way I can use it without a gas stove.

(Also I was going to be like 'what the fuck, that's so cheap???' but I opened the video and I think those are smaller than the ones I'm used to, which are like... at lest 6" long, head to tail)
