vital functions
Jun. 27th, 2021 09:31 pmReading. I continue to make (slow) progress with The Silmarillion, and have also begun taking steps toward catching up with Dreamwidth!
Watching. Orphan Black S05E05.
Cooking. A particularly pleasing batch of mushroom stroganoff, where the main thing I did differently was actually cook the onions down slowly over several hours rather than rushing them.
I also managed most of the prep for another round of butternut squash tart, but after The Shed Adventures wound up not feeling up to actually combining them. That will happen tomorrow evening...
Eating. Redcurrants! Whitecurrants! A raspberry! A jostaberry!
Creating. tiny adventures in botanical illustration.
Making & mending. I have ordered replacement parts for both the Felco model 7, having established that the lifetime warranty considers this "fair wear & tear", and for the autovent, having managed to strip a thread while remounting it with its new cylinder fitted (ugh).
I eventually remembered that I own a second pair of secateurs - Felco model 2, bought before I realised that (i) my grandmother had owned a pair of Felco model 7, and (ii) my mother Disdained them and therefore I Got Them. (The 7 is generally fancier than the 2, having a rotating handle to reduce hand strain and also more options for adjusting blade tension.) And even I managed to find them! ... and they were badly in need of a clean and some oiling, so I have done that and they are now performing entirely adequately while I wait for parts.
I have worked out why the fruit cage is being uncooperative, and will fix that tomorrow.
Also, I sat around flapping while A dismantled a shed.
Growing. The first of my squash has finally deigned to germinate! The redcurrants are ripening sufficiently rapidly that I'm going to need to start harvesting! All but one of the fennel seedlings has Evaporated! And the first of the peas I planted out having got them started indoors... promptly got its stalk eaten through at the base, ugh. I will take the next batch out... at some point.
Newly sown: some cucumber (better late than never), a second batch of fennel, some more peas.
Weeded: substantially around the gooseberry and a little further in to the fruit cage, plus some maintenance of the big beds.
Infrastructure: shed???
Observing. BAT. Swifts! Sparrows! And also I have seen the starlings out and about at home some more.
