kaberett: A very small snail crawls along the edge of a blue bucket, in three-quarters profile with one eyestalk elegantly extended. (tiny adventure snail)

I rolled eventually out of bed this morning, for croissants and strawberries and orange juice and The Forbidden Hot Chocolate, and was summoned by Adam to Observe a Snail. That had climbed almost all the way up the patio doors and was lurking at the top of the glass.

It has been added to the snail tank.

In other "small friends" news, today I was in the process of washing my hair while the pet robot went when I thought I heard upon the door A Knocking. I emerged dubiously from the shower (A was out), observed that the Roomba was crawling up and down the ramp to the front door and banging into it, called "hello?", received no response, and returned to the shower.

Whereupon A sent me a small and pathetic IM explaining very politely that it had been A Knocking, that was not performed by our autonomous vacuum cleaner, and could I please let him in because he'd locked himself out (again).

... I remain very amused at having confused the two of them.

...so, uh, I have a thought for a thing to serve where the dairy does in Hot Chocolate that shouldn't be an issue for calcium in this application that I know for a fact makes for perfectly excellent Hot Chocolate

but also I do not wish to be a hlepy overbearing asshole going HAVE YOU TRIED YOGA? so uh, anyway, if you're interested let me know and I'll be happy to share and if not then please do just ignore this comment wholesale. <3

Fair enough!

We've found that coconut cream--canned coconut cream, rather than coconut milk, although of course you CAN skim the cream off the top of a can of the latter it's easier to work with the stuff that's thicker to begin with her--makes for a very rich, lovely hot chocolate. We discovered this because we have a nibling that is allergic to milk protein. We have folks who go straight for it at the Christmas party, even without being dairy-averse!

I do suggest finding a brand of coconut milk/cream that doesn't throw in agar or other thickeners but I mean, I suggest that anyway if you do any cooking whatsoever with coconut liquid heh.

But yeah anyway in my experience with a strong hot chocolate, the coconut flavour is not as in your face as it can be in some applications. (I mean, I like the flavour anyway but I know not everyone is enamoured of it when using it as a dairy substitution.)

Say, can you give any advice on setting up a snail tank? A friend is considering it.

Basically everything I know is via https://www.petsnails.co.uk/

We have cuttlebone from a pet bird supply shop, a few bits of wood (java and cork) and a water bowl from a pet lizard supply shop, and the tank itself is a cheap transparent plastic thing from a local hardware store, with some holes drilled in. I also added a small T-shaped piece of drainpipe, which the original snail definitely seems to enjoy sleeping in. And for soil I bought a bag of sterilised loam. Apart from the drainpipe, this is all just following suggestions from that site.

Very happy to take additional questions, with the caveat that we're very definitely not experts!

What I love about this story is it implies you talked aloud to the Roomba, to explain its mistake, in a way that A could hear through the door.

Because really, who doesn't talk to their pets when it's just the two of them at home?
