Jan. 31st, 2021 11:55 pmReading. Max Gladstone, Last First Snow. I am this close to pulling together all of the pieces we get about Elayne Kevarian's backstory and seeing if I can collage them into a coherent timeline, and if not why not. This is still a very soothing reread.
Writing. A cover letter for the hopefully-final resubmission of That Paper, alongside checking over and tweaking the hopefully-final revisions. I also folded the appendix back in to the main text for chapter purposes, and rejigged all the figures so they're approximately the same for formatting purposes, and faffed around with TeX a bunch. Unfortunately I'm having a fight with achieving (1) centred table captions (at the top), (2) a centred table itself (independent of what the cell contents are doing), and (3) justified table footnotes. This is... typesetting I am going to have to continue fighting with, sigh.
Playing. We have started Myst III! Unfortunately the camera panning in this also gives me motion sickness, but it's much less severe than Obduction so A is driving and I'm mostly not looking at the screen (i.e. I'm minimal help for navigation and fitting things together) until there's A Puzzle. The puzzles, to my astonishment, I am doing decidedly well at working out, for all I'm then having difficulty translating the solution-shape in my head into Actual Words that communicate to A what I want to try doing next and why.
A little more Among Us, which I continue greatly enjoying. (I say "a little": in fact two spontaneous evening games, with overlapping sets of cousins et al., both of which I enjoyed greatly.) A particularly satisfying end to today's session: I was the impostor in a game of hide-and-seek, and having apparently spent most of the game chasing people around the ship and not, as I was half-convinced, in fact just running around an empty ship, I was about half a second away from catching up with the last crewmate I needed to dispatch when... the final task got completed.
Lots more dragons. I am slowly working my way back up to Slightly More Horn. And, to my mild astonishment, PoGo has in fact annoyed me enough that I didn't touch it all week, which is possibly... some kind of progress.
Cooking. Oh this week has been fun. On Monday: tagine, Dundee cake, and prep for marmalade. Followed by, on Tuesday: marmalade. I also wrote up the mulled apple juice for A's benefit, after he made a batch of same. And, finally, we collaboratively cooked two new-to-us recipes this week: leek fritters with garlic and lemon, from the smitten kitchen cookbook, and cacio e pepe potatoes anna, from smitten kitchen every day. We're Planning Meals For A Week (or two, as the case may be) while we put together grocery orders, at the moment, and I have decreed that one of the things we will do is Pick At Least One Cookbook Recipe to try. A is pro both of these entering the rotation, even if the leeks are a bit of a faff; I am pro the potato nonsense with the caveat that I think we probably want Broccoli or some other kind of vegetable alongside it as well as spinach-leaves-dressed-with-balsamic-vinegar (spinach substituted for rocket because A inexplicably doesn't like it), and also next time we do this I'm going to also finely slice some onion and garlic and layer those in with the potato too.
Creating. Does playing very tentatively with handwriting for the purposes of journalling count? Yes, it does, for I have decreed it so. So: I've set up the beginning of my bullet journal for February, complete with Decorative Washi Tape, and it's making me happy to look at. Last month's experiment in glorified rainbow sticker-chart as physio incentive worked excellently, and this month I have a much better idea of how I want to order my colours for the purposes of actually maintaining a smooth-ish gradient. Long may this excitement last.

Date: 2021-02-01 01:57 am (UTC)I recently bought the first five Craft Sequence books as a Kindle bundle and I'm determined to give them another go. Three Parts Dead didn't sweep me off my feet the first time I tried it, so I may start with Two Serpents Rise this time and then circle back - or would Last First Snow be a better starting point? Currently I am reading Gladstone's Empress of Forever and enjoying it immensely.
Best of luck on your continued thesising!

Date: 2021-02-02 02:54 pm (UTC)(A few weeks ago there was a loud splash and some surprised ducks skittering away from something. And then a squirrel ran out of the water and back up a tree. No idea what that was about, but it was probably the most interesting thing about that day).
