... okay. so.

We have: a broken dishwasher.

I have: cut my finger. Not badly, but enough that I don't want to be submerging my hands in hot soapy water and then agitating them. (Washing-up gloves aren't a viable option, for [reasons].)

I had been doing the washing while A did the drying.

... A, it transpires, is the kind of person who doesn't rinse the washing-up suds off before putting things to drip-dry.

and this, children, is why you should always follow proper knife safety practices

…but suds are soap.

unrinsed suds are soap that will dry on the dish.

soap on the dish will attach to food on the dish before it becomes food in the mouth.

ahahahahahaha if it's the one I remember, it would have been on hp_britglish. But possibly I'm remembering something on Metafilter instead.

Apparently in the US there is a persistent cultural belief that not rinsing things will give you diarrhoea? Specifically referred to as 'soap shits' rather than anything to do with the obvious and sensible fact that the bubbles are just hiding the dirt and those things that some heathen has put in the draining rack covered in bubbles are NOT ACTUALLY CLEAN WTF.

As the child of such a heathen, I can confirm that the amount of detergent residue resulting from what I would consider a normal amount of washing up liquid used, does NOT result in any alteration in the taste of food or indeed in diarrhoea. it's still just wrong to not rinse things. (My mother had a dishwasher for many years, but she hasn't replaced the one that broke a few years ago. When I stay with her these days I do most of the washing up, and she thinks I am being nice instead of just Not Doing It Wrong).

I mean all dish soap is basically safe for human consumption, but I can't find any evidence that there's any big difference between liquid dish soap in the UK vs North America?

(also for me the sound of a fork or knife on a ceramic/stoneware dish that has the soap film on it is enough to make do the exorcist neck twist and death by flames because the sound crawl up my neck and starts a Really Bad Day)

...wait. You're not saying he doesn't do a perfectly thorough job of rinsing. You're not saying you see a few bubbles here and there on the dishes. you're saying he DOESN'T RINSE THEM AT ALL???

not only does that leave detergent on the dish, the point of detergent and scrubbing is to get stuff off the dishes and into the water so it can be washed away. so if you're not rinsing them, a lot of the gunk is still there.

I am horrified.
