some good things make a post
Apr. 17th, 2020 11:14 pm- I have, today, been managing brief walking-without-sticks! It doesn't last long before the "rest" part of the "rest, ice, compression, elevation" protocol makes its importance Emphatically Known, but I am pleased about this. (And increasingly convincing myself that I did in fact sublux the ankle, in despite of Urgent Care asserting they'd expect more obvious soft tissue damage than that -- I am not convinced that they were taking the hypermobility sufficiently into account.)
- We got indirect confirmation yesterday that someone I'd been a little worried about is okay.
- Today's attempt at injera was, I think, fairly conclusively The Best Yet: the texture's still not right but I'm hoping that once the batter's had closer to a 48h ferment than a 24h ferment it'll manage being a bit more bubbly, and in any case I've established that lower heat = less sticking to the pan, about which I am Pleased. (The fridge still contains so much wat.)
- More plants coming up. One extremely elderly courgette seed has actually sprouted and I'm very proud of it (and crossing my fingers for actually raising it to production and hopefully getting some more seeds out of it); the Gigantes beans are starting to unfurl.
- I think I've now actually worked through all the maths-and-Science I need to do for response-to-reviewers such that all ("all") that remains is finishing making the words go, in both the manuscript and the response. I'm second-guessing myself over it, naturally, but I am increasingly stubbornly convinced that while I might need to clarify or refine some wording, and the paper is improved by my revised graphs, Fundamentally I Was Right All Along.
- I have spent a lot of this evening curled up sideways on a sofa reading a trashy novel. I have bought a new release I'm looking forward to reading.
- To my utter confusion, I'm actually feeling pretty cheerful and positive and anticipatory about settling down to do my accounts Properly, now that my quarterly paper statement has arrived. I've not got to it yet, but apparently this is something I've stopped being terrified of.
- Language-learning etymology of the week: samhain and samhradh are in fact related in the obvious fashion, the latter being modern Irish for "summer" and the former being "summer's end". This pleases me a very great deal and means I can now remember the words.
- Yesterday's bread: it was a higher proportion of white than usual, as we'd got to the end of a sack of wholemeal, and rising much more enthusiastically than I'm accustomed to, so rather than leaving it to prove overnight in the fridge I just went ahead and baked it, and pulled it out of the oven at around ten o'clock (or, well, got Adam to). It came out beautifully picturesque, and I'm basking a bit in Having Got The Hang Of This.
- Fuzzy blankets. Fuzzy pyjamas. Going in a big warm pile. These things are all very good indeed, and tomorrow morning they won't even be interrupted by an alarm. Bed now yes.

Whereas there is a bone in my foot that I can sublux by wearing sandals with no backs on them and it hurts like heck and doesn't go back to where it should be without someone who is Properly Trained At This poking it and telling it to behave. And I'm certain there's *something* that goes slightly wrong in my ankle, separate to that, but I didn't realise it until someone accidentally fixed it, and I've never been able to explain it well enough to get it fixed again.

Date: 2020-05-05 11:08 pm (UTC)(Belatedly!) Given the whole thing of hEDS is having joints sufficiently lax enough to sublux regularly, there just wouldn't be the same amount of soft tissue damage they'd be expecting, because the degree of physical trauma needed for a normal dislocation just doesn't need to happen in a sublux. They've probably never had someone explicitly make that clear to them during their training, which means as far as they've been taught there is no difference, so no major tissue damage, no sublux.

Date: 2020-05-06 07:06 am (UTC)My uncertainty is mostly that I've not had my ankles go before, and the sensation was definitely different to when my hip goes!
(My foot is still swollen & tender, though, so...)

Date: 2020-05-06 03:49 pm (UTC)I'm not a good model considering how rarely I sublux, and the only times I've definitely screwed my ankle it's been abundantly clear I've had significant soft tissue damage given the spectacular bruising. OTOH there's been a bunch of times when I've done stuff just as bad and that reasonably should have been a sprained ankle given how far I went over on it, and completely gotten away with it. Being bendy means there's a lot of range for potential results across apparently similar incidents.
Let's just hope it was a one-off.
