(i.e. HEY [personal profile] niqaeli I FINALLY TRIED OUT THE THING)

Photo of the back of someone's head, showing a complicated messy braid.

This is recently-washed hair, after a day of Doing Stuff including Going To The Gym, and was also my first attempt, so -- yep, it's messy, and also I will... do better at dividing my hair next time, but I'm tolerably pleased with it as proof-of-concept. It is indeed remarkably comfortable to wear.

Also: [syndicated profile] shittydinosaurs_feed is now a thing that exists.

It really is quite comfy, isn't it! It re-distributes the weight of the hair nicely; I prefer a french braid slightly for that but it's much harder for me to cleanly french braid my own hair (I can take breaks doing the bog braid, doing one section at a time and tying it off with an elastic; a french braid sort of just has to get done all in one go).

And, yeah, fresh-washed hair is a lot more pain in the ass to wrangle in this style.

Ooh! That looks great. I'm bad at braiding my own hair but this looks like something I could do, even with my fine hair. Thanks for posting about it!

Oooh! If you do it again, I would really appreciate a view of the side, as I'm having real trouble working out the rope braid structure. I mostly just do a standard plait on mine, as it best shows off my stoat tail.

It's a very flexible basic concept and you can absolutely just do a standard plait on the bottom two sections of hair! It'll make it a 9 strand braid on the bottom braid instead of a 7, but honestly no one can tell the difference without examining the braid closely with it down (instead of in the final bun).

That is SO COOL!

There’s no way I’ll grow my hair out long enough for this before getting cross and cutting it all off, but I am trying to grow it right now and this is a nice inspiration, thank you.

Cool!

When i had long hair i always struggled with centred braids and usually did two side ones with varying degrees of fanciness.
I didn't cover back then - this does look like it would be a comfortable way to distribute the weight of long hair under a wrap

But sadly I think I have too little a)hair b)dexterity to make it work. How does one rope braid?

Mine is at the length where it gets sat on if loose, but not if braided, so perhaps similar! It is also at the length of “unless I clip the braid up in thirds while dancing, it tends to thwack people on the spins” :p Definitely contemplating this as a possible solution, especially for when I forget to bring the big hair barrette!

Two-strand rope braid is the easy kind of rope braid - divide hair into two sections, twist both sections in the same direction, wrap the two sections around each other in the direction that they want to go in. If you are at all familiar with spinning/plying yarn, it is basically that!

TODAY’S HAIRSTYLE IS BOG MUMMY!! I ended up with a tail-hanging-down version because I did not think to bring pins with me. We shall see if it survives dancing this way! My mother thinks it is really cool and my sister is horrified at the concept XD
