Like I think my experiences are... more pervasive... than the airline-food study suggests (I am preeetty sure it's not just umami and sweet that get fucked up for me) -- but that is in fact completely in line with "autism" and, as you say, "sensory processing"! I just didn't realise this was a thing allistics did at all, let alone something that widespread and well-documented, so next time I'm explaining I don't want to eat in place X because I won't be able to taste the food I will have SCIENCE to back me up with instead of just treating it as a personal quirk to be vaguely ashamed of and apologetic about!
OK, I didn’t think it could possibly true that I can’t hear as well when I don’t have my glasses on, which is a thing I’ve said since adolescence. But no!
...noisy restaurants might want to re-think their noise...
Also, HUH! (We avoid noisy places since Offspring is not keen on sensory overload causing a meltdown, so I don't think they've noticed this one? I could be wrong. They don't tell me everything. O:> )
I had sortof assumed this was true for most people to some extent.
My biggest problem with very noisy restaurants is that I can't decide what to eat. I'm usually already hungry which by itself will make decisions harder; with sufficient noise I can't even scan the menu for a familiar default choice that is usually acceptable.
(I still nurse a grudge about the fact that Wagamama used to have a reliably Alex-food noodle soup on the menu, back in, oooh, 2014 or so, and they REMOVED IT circa 2015 so now they're not even reliable-easy-food for me!)
This confirms all my experiences and many of my biases ;-)
