I spent some of last night's insomnia Reorganising My Tabs to make everything make a bit more sense. I now have a tab tree of linkspam, and a tab tree of Books To Do Something About, and a tab tree of seeds, and a tab tree of all the academic papers I opened from e-mail alerts and need to shift over to the other desktop. HERE GOES.

Ooh that Hochschild article was really interesting. Gonna have to think about "alienated labour" a bit, specifically why so many tasks that "normally we associate with the expression of connection, love, commitment" come up so often in these "emotional labour" / second-shift discussions as specifically burdensome.

But also omg many women cannot afford the luxury of unambivalent love for their husbands is very on-point, ouch.

I really appreciate the emotional labour link. I didn't really know the history of the term or that it was supposed to be about managing *one's own* emotions rather than *other people's emotions*, but my reaction to a lot of things I've seen about emotional labour has been "I acknowledge that all of these things are issues that need to be addressed but I don't think it makes sense to include them all under the heading of emotional labour - some of them seem to have very little to do with emotions".

In relation to this, I've seen some interesting conversations about how desperate women and other female-coded people are for a term that encapsulates "all the shit that turns invisible but is about keeping people happy", but -- yeah, what you are saying also.
