I spent some of last night's insomnia Reorganising My Tabs to make everything make a bit more sense. I now have a tab tree of linkspam, and a tab tree of Books To Do Something About, and a tab tree of seeds, and a tab tree of all the academic papers I opened from e-mail alerts and need to shift over to the other desktop. HERE GOES.

*heaps affection/appreciation at Ms Hochschild's feet for FULLY ENGAGING WITH THE FACT THAT EMOTIONAL LABOUR IS VARIABLE BETWEEN PEOPLE AND CIRCUMSTANCES EVEN WHEN IT IS IN FACT BEING USED AS AN APPROPRIATE LABEL*

THE TURTLE BLOG

HOW DID I MISS THAT BEFORE

oh Darren Naish you are a national treasure. At some point I'm going to write up all the fascinating things I learned about mammalian genital evolution from getting caught up writing Yondu slash and thinking about marsupial genitals in detail, and I can only hope to be quite that entertaining about it.

Ooh that Hochschild article was really interesting. Gonna have to think about "alienated labour" a bit, specifically why so many tasks that "normally we associate with the expression of connection, love, commitment" come up so often in these "emotional labour" / second-shift discussions as specifically burdensome.

But also omg many women cannot afford the luxury of unambivalent love for their husbands is very on-point, ouch.

Many thanks for these, they were lovely to behold. And [personal profile] staranise's technique looks very useful.

Found via the beauty-via-sexual-selection link I posted the other week.

Entirely plausible that I just failed my Spot check, but I didn't find this link anywhere and am a curious.

*goes to read the rest*

I really appreciate the emotional labour link. I didn't really know the history of the term or that it was supposed to be about managing *one's own* emotions rather than *other people's emotions*, but my reaction to a lot of things I've seen about emotional labour has been "I acknowledge that all of these things are issues that need to be addressed but I don't think it makes sense to include them all under the heading of emotional labour - some of them seem to have very little to do with emotions".
