And, do you know, that rather makes up for the days and weeks of rain and mud and darkened rooms with only the hum of the microscope for company.
One of the other benefits is that nobody asks you to look at dead things unless they're millions of years old.
(Mostly, of course, your office contains a desk and a computer and you end up dreaming wistfully of the volcanoes you're studying, but somehow we make do.)
(Don't get me started on the coral palaeontologists, though.)
