The Temeraire series is going to be entirely responsible if I fail my degree. It's the Napoleonic wars, right, only with an air force.

I'm also mainlining Dianna Wynne Jones at the moment, but, er, from my point of view, NAPOLEONIC WARS. With DRAGONS. No contest.


For the first time in ages I am desperate to write fanfic: in particular I'd like to play with the Cambridge scientists mentioned as Doing Science on the dragons. No idea where to take it beyond that sketch outline, though, or really how to turn it into a story. But any fic recs will be gratefully received...

Both! Some bits are very very sad and some bits are very very lovely and, well, apparently I'm feeling weepy at the moment.

It's a bit _too_ "just like the Napoleonic wars only with dragons". With dragons, you can't be just like the Napoleonic wars...

The mechanics and strategising are sufficiently described and different to keep my attention, and the whole is familiar enough to be comforting (the similarities to the Pern books bother me more than the similarities to the Napoleonic wars!). From my point of view it's an excellent thing to be reading instead ofin breaks from project work.

(Alas and woe, the library did not have any of the sequels.)

I'm not saying I didn't like them, but the wargames / military history / Hornblower narg in me is still protesting that you can't do the Napoleonic wars with relatively easy aerial reconnaissance.

... and yeah, they don't all breathe fire, but even a few would irrevocably change the face of naval warfare.

hmmmm, I may have to look into them. I am re-reading some of my Pern books atm as I am trying to get rid of books (boo!) as I have more kindle and less bookshelving. Sigh.
