Gentle murblings about plans for the next few days.
My mother has just given me sack #1 of apples, and I'm going to pick up sack #2 tomorrow while I'm in Cambs (goes the intention). Consequently I am thinking gently about baking. In addition to stewing a lot of them I'm planning to spend Friday making:
(1) Apfelstrudel
(2) upside-down gingerbread apple cake (smitten kitchen swapped some of the molasses for honey then cut the sweetness of the topping -- I suspect I'll slightly cut the sugar for the topping but leave the molasses as-is)
(3) the sk apple-and-honey cake was good last time I made something that wasn't actually it at all and I suspect it will be again (+ some ground almonds in the batter, natch)
(4) macaroni cheese (which is not made with apples)
... and then Sunday dinner is going to be veggie shepherd's pie, I Have Decreed, with potato-celeriac mash and a bit of cheese (and maybe some roasted garlic in the mash if I'm feeling enthusiastic); body of lentils-finely chopped mushroom-celery-leek-carrot-onion-peas-stock.

Date: 2015-11-04 09:52 pm (UTC)You can also do the thing where you skin them and chop them up, stick them in a pan with a bit of water, and stew them til they mush. The mush then goes in jam jars, and can be used as filling for apple pies/crumbles/etc or in stewed red cabbage and so on As The Year Goes On. (I have in fact just finished the last jar of same that was in the pantry!)
