BECAUSE I DIDN'T. Met [personal profile] ewt for elevenses-slash-lunch yesterday, was loaned a partial exoskeleton (enough thermoplastic ring splits to do one on each digit) that inevitably doesn't fit me quite right, and it is still enough better than not that I am grumblingly conceding I'm going to have to get some of my own.

Cheapest way to order plastic Oval-8 ring splints is from the manufacturer. Don't use the .com (US) site if you can help it, it charges more.

Metal ones are from Zomile.

Thumbs are hard, but this is probably the cheapest way to get a thermoplastic thumb splint without seeing a hand therapist. You'll need a heat gun or boiling water to shape the plastic bit.

Of course, the NHS will do you the plastic ones for free, if you can play the waiting-for-a-referral game long enough to get someone to agree that you need them.

The hand therapists I saw at UCLH a few years ago were not that keen on prophylactic splinting, but this was 2008, so things may have changed.
