... on checking the work calendar to determine whether you can manage an overnight run on a Friday, you establish that in fact you can because nobody has the machine booked on the Saturday or Sunday and consequently you start seriously considering blowing off (1) a friend's housewarming and (2) your mum's birthday, because data.

(Relatedly: dear Wednesday!Alex, thank you heaps for making an enormous vat of leek-and-potato soup to be eaten straight from the fridge. Love, today!Alex, who has eaten about three portions of the stuff.)

If it helps, the main reason I'm not likely to actually do this is that I, er, have been ill enough that I don't have enough samples prepped to keep going for that long.

I think one of my jobs for the next time I have a spare evening is to make & freeze a bunch of quiche crusts and maybe some pizza? I am better at life when I have food I can just take out the freezer. Hmm. Maybe it is time for another huge batch of lasagna to be frozen in portions a la ...

I am not an experimental scientist.... but I'm certainly not a theorist, so unless we introduce a third category ("computational scientist?"), I'm closer to the experimental side.....

...and yes, I am very aware that I shall be going on holiday for two and a bit weeks and leaving my two computing workstations idle, which is a total of four weeks of wasted computing time, and this makes me feel sad and a little guilty...

The real question is - are you running it because the equipment is so tightly scheduled that not running it at every available opportunity screws up a timetable?

There's almost always competition for machine time and I've almost always got more samples I could run. So... a free weekend when I've already got the thing set up for my own nefarious porpoises? HELL yes I'm going to take that, given even half a chance.

I trimmed my list of 55 potential measurements down to 33, and have worked out the most plausible way of fitting them all in over the course of the weekend given how infrequently I'll be able to check in :-) (Because "too tired to actually spend the entire time on mass spec" CLEARLY means "so fit it in around the social events in two different cities"...)
