[a silly little poem about apples]

Have you ever noticed how even the most mundane,
most everyday of objects, contain stars?
Not stardust -- nothing so prosaic, nor so plain --
(for after all we're every one first born in hearts of flame)
but stars: pointed, bright, and sharp.
They hang heavy on the branches of
a tree that patient grows
at the bottom of
the garden of my childhood.
Don't believe me?
Take an apple. Cut in half--
no, not longitudinal--
along the equator--

(An apple is an oblate sphere,
or close enough,
with skin and flesh and core,
just as the Earth from which it grew
has core and mantle, crust--
the symmetry brings heavens to our grasp.)

and gentle carve away the fruit
from twixt the branching seeds
and see: a star lies in your palm.

Thank you! We're up to nearly four dozen jars of the wretched things preserved, and there's so many left to go (we're not even bothering to pick them - we're just taking the windfalls the critters don't get to first!)

Thank you! It is at least cold enough outside that they're keeping fairly well once down, now, so I will just get to spend the holidays doing More Apples and as many of the baby figs as I can :-)

Oh, yes! Very nice. The little digression towards the end there is definitely my favourite part, though I am also quite fond of those last three lines.

My year 9 geography teacher, I think it was, pointed out that skin/flesh/core of an apple are actually proportionally correct for modelling the Earth, and it's stuck with me :-)
