So I had my first appointment with my new GP today - yes, the one where the receptionists left me in floods in public two weeks ago - and it actually went astonishingly well, starting with getting called into the consulting room under the correct name (... though they still haven't actually entered it into the system as my default name, but I will deal with that when I take them some paperwork.)

Details contain needles, trans stuff, misc chronic illness.
SO I went in with a list of 10 things to discuss - in a 20-minute appointment, of which the two I didn't cover were because I didn't want to rather than because I was being kicked out. We sorted out:
  • some repeat prescriptions, including a check-up on my asthma
  • a discussion about thinking about increasing my anti-depressant dose for winter, which basically went "how much do you have? hmm, a month, right, in that case I'll just put [the higher dose] on repeat for you, because you'll probably be wanting to change by then, right?" "And if not I can always cut the tablets in half," I responded, and on we moved.
  • whether they want to take baseline bloods for me (no)
  • flu vaccines, and specifically if they had them in already. "Yes," she said; "actually, I think there's a flu clinic going on right now, I'll see if we can squeeze you in at the end." We got to the end of my list of things. She said "right, I'll just pop out and check on the flu clinic for you," and returned bearing a vaccination, which she then administered with absolutely no fuss.
  • how to get my supporting documentation for a Freedom Pass in order ("complete your bit of the form, drop it off with us, and we'll do our bit and post it so you don't have to deal with the stamps" -- I was expecting to have to pay £20!)
  • a referral to endometriosis specialists
  • and a referral to Charing Cross ("to be honest, I have never actually had a trans patient before, so I'll phone them up and chat to my colleagues and let you know the next steps").

Seriously, I was gobsmacked. She wasn't horrified by anything, she treated me as scientifically literate, she told me what she'd do and what info I needed to get them, and then she checked she had my contact details and told me she's off work for a week so I probably won't be hearing from her before she gets back.

And, like I said, we dispatched all that lot plus some polite conversation in a 20-minute appointment.

I am sold.

This was my experience with both the therp and GP I found in my mid-30's, before working out the trans issues. When I was finally able to reveal that, it was all taken in stride, in fact moreso than I considered. This is the standard I have come to *expect* from medical professionals.
