today I have won--
Mar. 15th, 2025 11:56 pmSo for Reasons A ended up taking my pruning saw to building infrastructure earlier, with the result that we had a not insignificant quantity of plasterboard to get rid of. A asked for help carrying it out to the bins; I pointed out that tips-sorry-household-waste-recycling-centres usually have a dedicated skip for specifically plasterboard; A was quite "... I am DUBIOUS about how it gets 'recycled'"; I hypothesised wildly about the fundamental nature of plasterboard; some poking of the internet later A confirmed that my hypothesis ("well I mean you can presumably break it down and... reuse it... to make more plaster...") appeared to be accurate (enough for government work).
So off we went to the tip! Where, as a SPECIAL TREAT, we also went around The Reuse Shop. We acquired: a bike carrier for the car; a set of filters for compost caddy that I expect us to be able to cut to fit our compost caddy although that's not what they were designed for; a butter dish in our preferred form factor; a bread board ditto; AND the things I am MOST excited about, which are: TINY CLOTHES PEGS for pepper seed-saving purposes, and A DIBBER (which I have long desired but not been able to coax myself into paying Actual Full Price Money For).
Did we come home with more Objects than we left with? On the one hand yes but on the other I managed to sort some of my piles of horror from the boot, and the things acquired Against Future Use are definitely things that will get future use, so I'll take it.

Date: 2025-03-16 12:44 am (UTC)Because of reasons I spent some time disposing, one fiesta-bootload at a time, of some Look It's Just Plaster, It's Got Hair In And Everything, and also (unrelatedly) rather a lot of tiles. They both go in the 'misc rubble NO SOIL NO PLASTIC NO WOOD' skip round here, and I have spent time politely querying the local authority's pricing structure with various highly-visible employees of said collection of skips ("oh, well, you see, because I am allowed to use my discretion I will only charge you for three bags/boxes instead of four today", which is all very well for my fluttering eyelashes but not a sensible way of writing a policy). But plasterboard is more expensive.
Plasterboard has so far only been disposed of in sufficiently small quantities that it got broken up and disguised in black bags, because it turns out there is a limit to how much I care, especially when it requires interacting with the high-vis bureaucrats.
... I am not allowed to spend any longer in the shop than is deemed necessary to pay for chargeable waste. I am not allowed to poke around the collection of Outdoor Things that are not even in the shop. I am DEFINITELY not allowed to pay too much attention to anything that is already IN a skip. So far the only things I have acquired from the tip are a hideous souvenir plate (In a very full skip! Not even a little bit chipped!) and a large wood-framed mirror (found leaning up against the wood skip, presumably because its confusing nature prevented the former owner from actually putting it into the skip). You win at acquiring things from the tip, congratulations :)

Date: 2025-03-16 09:17 am (UTC)I've not looked into the details recently enough to remember, but generally the local authorities will let you dispose of small amounts for free, but they won't let you in with obviously commercial vehicles, and they pay close attention to how much people bring in if they're making multiple trips.
I expect it's a relatively straightforward system to trick if you were that way inclined; the goal won't be to make it perfect, just good enough that builders decide it's less faff to pay for the commercial waste disposal without encouraging households to send things that could be recycled into general waste.
